Huge catfish through the ice!

I mean sturgeon.

Sure are a lot of "catfishermen" out on the croix the past few winters.

Sometimes you have a good day fishing. Danielle Pettee of Stillwater had a really good day last week.

She was ice fishing on the St. Croix River for catfish when she hooked a monster sturgeon that was 70 inches long and 29 inches around.

The fish was estimated to weigh between 105 and 120 pounds.

They took the picture and then released it.

Actually with 2 holes, you still don’t gain much in diameter . I’ve heard the preferred method out there is 3 holes in a triangle shape. It’s a good thing I don’t live closer because I’m sure I’d be tempted to be out there “catfishing” too.

I never get down there to fish, so I don't know the regs, but from the chatter, I assume it's illegal to purposefully target sturgeon??

you are correct, the season on the croix is sept 1 through oct 15 with a harvest season over 60" oct 1 to oct 15

but as long as there is no harm to the fish i see less of a problem with it than for example snagging flatheads out of a wintering hole or fishing on spawning beds

I've heard and seen plenty of Sturgeon come through the holes out there but never one of that size! Wow, incredible fish. That thing must be a dinosaur.
