NEANGLER
FYI, the beef and pork markets are going crazy right now and no end in sight in the near future. Now poultry is starting to see a up turn due to people going to poultry because of cost. If you have any room in your freezer it would be a good idea to stock up for your summer grilling needs before it really gets bad.

OnAFly
I bought chicken breast for $1.79/lb and thighs for $.79/lb last week. Maybe it hasn't gotten here yet.
NEANGLER
The herd shortages on beef are starting to hit the market now, if you have been at the store lately you have seen ground beef take a big jump as well as beef hot dogs close to $5 a package. Pork industry is going through a disease that is killing the piglets and they haven't gotten it under control. Estimated losses are 900,000- mil I. Already lower herd than last year. Raw material costs ie belly's, trim, hams, loins, butts, ribs are at or will be at all time record highs. Saw name brand bacon at Cashwise this week at $6.49'a pkg and their brand on "special" for $4.50. Way higher than normal and will get worse. Because of the high prices on beef and pork, pressure has been put on poultry which was not expected and flock numbers are lower than can meet demand. Talked to a poultry sales rep on Tuesday and said they have seen a $.50/lb increase in just one month on breasts. He said it will get worse on there side as well until they can get the flock numbers built back up. Historically all proteins go up in the summer time due to grilling season, throw in these factors and it's going to get ugly- higher prices at the store and at restaurants. Pork ribs are in short supply right now and that price quoted earlier for spare ribs is what you should be paying for St. Louis ribs right now. Bacon is going to be out of sight since we are already tight on inventory in the industry and now Mcdonalds announced several new sandwiches w bacon on them. They are one of the few companies out there that can affect a market when they add an item. Beef trim will continue to go up so items like ground beef and hotdogs are going to be very high. We saw our raw material costs for our burgers go up $.60/lb in one month.Just wanted to give a heads up, if you have room I would suggest taking advantage of some sales and maybe look for an old freezer on hsolist. We have never seen it this bad/ this high of markets and really no relief until November/December based on information in the industry. Alagnak
Just put a 1/2 beef in the freezer for $2.59 a lb cut and wrapped. Nice to have friends (with cattle).
JP Z
I wonder if any of these Pork problems are stemming from when Shuanghui bought Smithfield foods last year? If you aren't familiar with this situation I would check up on it
NEANGLER
JPZ, I am very familiar with it and it has very little to do with it, we have actually seen the biggest increase in exports from Mexico more than anywhere else - not China. Its cheaper for them to buy it here than to raise themselves, expecially with the drought Mexico has had the last several years. Do a Google search of PEDV and this shoud give you all the info you need on the hog side of things. If I can figure it out I will try and post the USDA reports and it clearly states it has little to do with exports (since exports overall are down vs last year) and way more to do with the underestimation of the effects on the hog herd from PEDV. Average hog produces 10 piglets and right now they are loosing an average of 4 hogs per litter - 40%. Doesn't take long to make a dramatic impact. With the price of corn now lower they are starting to breed more herds but it takes time to get cattle, hogs to maturity for the market. SkunkedAgain
There has also been industry talk about more people switching to "healthier" proteins such as poultry, so that in addition to the beef/pork increases will make poultry more expensive. At least all of our salaries are going up to match....oh wait...
Ebiz
I believe fresh Chicken breasts are still $1.79# at Cub through the end of the week
the squirrel
If anyone see's the St.Louis cut pork ribs go on sale at Target again for $1.99/lb please post thanks!!
NEANGLER
I doubt you will see that price on St Louis ribs until fall now, just looked at the USDA market sheet and fresh spare ribs closed at $1.92/lb last night. Just for reference I looked at the USDA for Bone in pork loins and it went up .12/lb in four days. Demand will finally push back some of these prices as people will buy less at the store, go out to eat less but it may take a little while.I will try to do a update once a week or so unless we see some major swings. NEANGLER
Those are very good prices and a good buy based on where the market is. Some retailers will take positions on loads when they see the market going up. Still for wholesale prices those are high but for retail pretty good. Look at restaurant Depot, Appert's cash and carry, Costco, SAMs etc to get better deals on fresh meat items, especially if you don't mind a larger pack. Some Foodservice distributors will do a cash sale as well, just need to check with their customer service. The problem is with retail we think we are getting a good deal especially when they do a sale, but the Mark up is huge. IE one time I looked at the local grocery store and a particular item they had we sell wholesale, their "special" price on that item for the week was 3.19/lb regular $3.49 and our price to wholesaler was $1.35/lb. Wholesalers can't do that kind of markup due to so much competition - it's usually cents not dollars per pound markups.

Pherris
i better stock up on turkey legs. I have found them to be absurdly expensive. Not sure on price per pound but seemed pack of two running $6/$7 per pack. Necks are crazy too!

OnAFly
I wish companies would quit injecting everything with their nasty brine solutions. It seems that the only time I can find anything without any alterations, it's ridiculously expensive.
