MN Deer Classic

I'm going to be up there Saturday night for the t-wolves game and spending the night downtown saturday night. I was all excited to hit up this show on sunday until I saw on the HSOforum it was $12 per person to get in! My wife was already whining about having to go at all, so there's no way she'll go for it now. I saw a coupon for $2 off admission on the HSOforum but still, I cant justify $20. Maybe it's just me but that seems really high for admission. Maybe thats normal up there, but if it cost that much to get in down here where i'm from, no one would show up at all.

I love deer and have been a passionate deer hunter for decades. That being said, I'd sooner start my own house on fire and nail my privates to the front door than attend this orgy of hornography. It literally makes me sick to see how the wonderful tradition of deer hunting has been reduced to a sick, perverted game of antler worship. sicksicksick

As Dennis Miller used to say back when he was funny,"of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

Seriously?

The Deer Classic doesn't happen without vendors, vendors are trying to sell stuff. I don't think the outfitters sell many hunts by showing off all the forkhorns and spikes their clients shoot. I don't believe the food plot companies sell much seed by bragging about how many yearling bucks you will see if you plant their product. And I know there aren't too many guys bringing in their 6 point racks with a 7" inside spread to get them measured.

It's the Deer Classic, big antlers are the reason it exists.

Peat,i feel exactly what youre saying, what happened?, i thought huntin was for substinance.Im a meat hunter first and foremost, but if a monster comes by im takin him ,but thats a real longshot, being all the big money comes around and buys up all the prime spots or leases it.Then they manage for big bucks only and dont shoot does cause they think more does around brings more bucks ,pretty soon theres 50 does on a piece that nobody touches ,then they get cwd, then they get greased on the highway what a total waste!dont get me wrong i got alot of bone on the wall ,but all ya can do do is look at em ,cant hardly eat a big tuff ,rutted up buck !

Im gonna be 100% honest on this one. I thought the Classic was a great deal. I wish it got new ownership and a new facility. I enjoyed looking at all the racks and more than anything the sheds. For a guy to judge me for being awed by antlers is just plain ignorant. I like antlers, I always have. I also don't think there is anything wrong with displaying them. I am not a meat hunter or fisherman, that's why I have a full time job. I am an outdoorsman and I enjoy and respect deer and moose. This is why we all go to the whitetail classic. Case closed.

I don't quite get it either Bear, those that don't like the buck classic could start their own doe and fawn classic and force their attitudes, beliefs, and values in that manner. As I read this I kept waiting ok who's going to be the 1 to fire up a wild view of the deer classic, didn't take long and my prediction it would happen came true, deer classic if you want to go, go and if you don't don't go. I doubt there's this back room where grown men snicker and giggle and if we can only push our ways onto the others we'll be stylin right guys. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow, enjoy your life, family, friends, deer hunting, etc. My dad likely had a stroke last night, life is good at slapping us in the face now and again, bet deer hunting means a lot less to him now, now it's can I make it out ever again or am I done. Will figure that out by November 3rd 2012. Off to the hospital again.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
