House Down

Picture taken west of Alexandria, MN. This house was 40 yards north of mine last night. I was lucky enough to get mine off. I have heard of 5 houses going down in Grant County, MN. With these warm temps and high winds lots of things can happen in a short period of time! Be safe out there!

I had to use ropes and come-a-longs to get my house out of a 6 x 4 hole this mornimg. I fished in it last night and there was only a few puddles on the ice (over 9") so I put it up on the wheels so the wind could go around it and freeze up. HUGE MISTAKE. This morning it was in about 2 feet in on the one side. Didn't think I was going to get it out. I see one more (a coverted pick-up camper going in as we speak, so I hope he comes out and I will give him a hand (he has no address or dnr# on the house or I would find out his # and call him). Now the carpet in my house never looked cleaner after I sucked out about 2 gallons.

went to backyard lake this am, within 10-15 feet of shore my weight cracked top ice 3 times in 20 yard walk even with ice appearing 5-6 inches thick, nothing appears safe right now, if i go will be walking close to shore all way around ice so if i do go thru will not be more than 4 feet deep.......for an untouched lake would shoreline be more susebtable to weaknes right now over middle with heat melting away shoreline faster than middle? granted this ice helps nowhere

Here's another one on Little DL in Detroit Lakes. House was a spearing house and this guy decided to put it up on blocks to "attempt" to let it freeze up overnight. Unfortunately he had a pretty big puddle going already and the wind destroyed the ice in no time.

Is it the excessive wind blowing the puddles around that is deteriorating the ice so fast?

Wind + water on ice + open holes = BIG holes quickly. This happened to my house on oliver 5 or so years ago. Luckily before the hole got too big under the house, a cold front came in and froze it all back. Just needed an ice saw and 4x4/chains to get it out. Only thing that saved my house was my holes were partially froze before the warm-up. Guys that fished during the warm weather and had open holes under their houses were the ones who weren't so lucky.

Mine was in further than the one in chaws picture. The hardest part of getting it out is waiting for the water to come back out of the house to get it back on the ice so you are not pulling another 1600# in water weight. None of the hole catch covers came out and the door sealed real well. Had to blow the water out of the heater pilot line to make it work again. All fixed back up and ready for the ice again (when the ice is ready for me)

i was out on blue sunday hardyboy. where was the permy set up? i found 8 inches everywhere i drilled. Are the houses sinking because the holes don't freeze up and you get that toilet bowl effect in the holes eating the ice away?

I just pulled 2 spear houses away from their holes tonight,we speared in them yesterday and blocked them up around 4pm with a inch of standing water around them. Tonight the blocks were melted into the ice and the spear holes grew a foot all the way around. I moved them 10 to 15 feet away blocked them up again and will decide if I should pull them tomorrow, the forecast is making me lean towards pulling them frown

Its Never good to see anyones houses going in the ice! Someone drove there golf cart over a ice heave after driving through about 6" of water on the ice and then he got burnt by his own little propane heater(70 year old) BTW he drinks so you get the picture now.......

On the same lake there where people driving out with there trucks pulling houses but havent seen any open water by them yet....but i dont have my house out there

A few years ago we had the same thing as yesterday, 50 degrees and very high wind. Several houses went down all over the South Metro. My brother got his off while others around were his were went down. My buddy was able to get his off despite a 6x6ft hole at the end of his house. Saw a couple guys who had their house freeze back in after being half sunk. They spent days chain sawing and winching on it.

The strange thing was on 99% of the lake you could drive a large truck but because the houses were down to the ice it stopped the wind from going under the house which caused the a puddle to start which got bigger and bigger as the day went on. Sooner than later it got so big it swallowed the house up!

Sun heats house wind hits house and blows up, to both sides and down which melts the ice from under the house. You really don't get too much of a toilet bowl effect unless there is snow to melt off the ice or if it is raining very hard. We need cold!!!
