some of the new 4 stroke power augers are nice and light and not as cumbersome as my Eskimo 10 in. early ice i only use my hand auger, and later of course it's the power auger. one day i will get one of those lighter power augers but i will still have the hand auger for early ice. foot travel so i travel light on early ice. when i first started ice fishing all i used was a chisel, man how time fly's. good luck.

I definitely kept my hand auger and i keep it in the truck all winter. Since i bought my auger i haven't needed it. However, in previous years other people I've been fishing with had their auger go done with a broken recoil, lost shaft bolt, gummed carb, etc. if you drive any distance to a lake it's good insurance for me.

yes i had a bolt come off my blade on my power auger last year. did not bring my hand auger along. fortunatly Leech was there and he had some spare bolts and nuts and thankfully they fit. from that point on i bring it along just in case. good luck.

I made the mistake of not bringing the power auger in the house after using in freezing rain. The next day I tried to use the auger but the linkage was frozen solid. It's always nice to have a backup. And they aren't worth much if you try to sell it. Cheap insurance.

I have a Strikemaster Lazer 6" hand auger that I use exclusivley for first ice as I want to be a quiet as possible during first ice. Also it's nice and light when you have to walk a long distance. I always have a hand auger with along with a chisel! No need for a noisy power auger during first ice! 2c

I've fished the BWCA in the winter a few times. Gotta leave the power auger back at home if you go there.

I debating on picking up a 6" Nils hand auger just for early ice. After I got a 8" Strikemaster power auger I left the hand auger up at the in-laws hoping to get them into ice fishing a little. And so I'd have a way to drill holes if needed. I just wish the Nils wasn't so spendy.

wait... so is the mora a piece of #$%#@? or was it an Eskimo that you both used...? LOL! i only say this cause i used to run those augers and after a stingray and shark, they both failed misserabley!! i since have gone to jiffy! dont mean to make this a brand war!....... strikemaster... transmission issues!! .. in fact, last year i went on a work outing and the guy who "hosted it" is tony roach's cousin and gary roach's nephew.. anyways.. strikemaster sponsored! a co-worker looked at my new jiffy stealth and said " i want one" he said "no! the stikemaster is better!! it cuts faster!!... but i did have to get warranty work done due to the tranny gears stripping out!".... mmmm.. then why would you go with a strikemaster i said!... he shut-up after that!..... jiffy might be a bit heavier but built like the old school cars/trucks!! reliable!!

Gave my hand auger away a few years ago to a new fisherman, have regretted it since. Not the part of helping out a new fisherman, that was great, but I will be purchasing a new hand one this year.

Kind of stinks hauling out a power auger for 3-6" of new ice.

Lol, the new Jiffy's have plastic gearcases. Have fun with that tank.

I have used hand augers on eary ice, punching holes with the chisel on 3" of ice still gives me the Willies to this day ! I just recently found the new Normarch 6" Micro hand auger and Even though I have only tried it on Block ice, I will say that the reviews were right, it chews thru 8"of ice in 4 cranks ! At $94 dollars and replacement blades only $29 dollars, it was a much better option then paying extra money on the nils and having to wait on some Prebuy deal ?

Same here. I use mine for first ice and that's about it. I keep it in my truck the rest of the winter for a back up.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
