yeah, i was thinking smallmouth as well but those pictures are worse than a kid's crayon drawing.

I find it difficult to believe that someone managed to double the previous record and be 25% bigger than the world record.

I cant believe MPR even put that on their site. Disgrace.

IF this was even remotely true (and a rock bass) all he would have to do it have some decent pictures of it, and have it weighed on a certified scale (supermarket anyone?) and submit the record application after the government reopened.

This guy should be embarrassed.

Who's phone takes pictures that bad anyways? He should have just drawn it.

The second pic look like it has a lateral line like a largemouth. Looks nothing like a rocky. They usually have a short fat body with a tiny head and tail.

I'd bet its a smallie or largie with a few abnormalitys to make it appear like a rocky.

Shhhhhhhhhhh! That was going to be my back door into the record books, and I would feel little remorse killing a trophy rockie (if there is such a thing). I think the Rock Bass record is very beatable. I've caught a few that have been close.

But I agree, that's no rock bass! Got a good laugh from it though. LightningBG ---> "Should have just drawn it" = Hilarious

I'm wondering if maybe Big Cormorant doesn't typically produce smallmouth so the guy got confused. The second picture looks a little better, but the first looks like a nice smally.

terrible story, terrible pictures, terrible fisherman who can't ID a fish. What an [PoorWordUsage]...even if you had a state record rock bass, your plans would be to smoke it and eat it? Yuck.

That's a pretty nice smallmouth though.

I wonder if there are even any rock bass in that lake? I tried going to lakefinder to check, but...that's another rant.

I appreciated this part of the story:

John Store, owner of Quality Bait and Tackle in Detroit Lakes, MN, said that if Renecker's measurements are correct, "he's got a big one."

Really, Captain Obvious? Can you call some more sources to confirm whether or not a legitimate 19 inch rock bass would be large for a rock bass?

I've never understood the appeal of going through all the formalities and killing a freak of nature to potentially get your name in the fishing regs. book. MPR should be ashamed for posting this.
