What kind of line for an ultralight?

30" poles don't cast very well regardless of line type.

10/2 Power Pro. Thin diameter, plus some line strength for the snags in brush or the occassional northern or bass.

Berkley Trilene XL is awesome all around mono line. They also make a "smooth casting" Trilene line.

Though, I'm looking forward to trying Berkley's Nanofil line. Touted to improve your casting distance by 1.5x!! Also reported to be great for ice fishing too. This might be the only line I'll ever use if it lives up to its hype. Which the pros on here who have demoed it confirms all the hype so far.

I was using a 9' rod, slapped on the only reel I had with light line which was my ice fishing reel, Worked out great except the line was super stiff and didn't like to cast.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I've been using 4lb fireline on my 8'6 panfish setup this year, I was amazed how the line casts.

I run a 10' leader of 6lb vanish because I was sick of pike biting off my crappie jigs. So far so good, landed a lot of panfish, plus some bass, pike up to 30", and my PB walleye.

Not sure if it really matters much as well but I like the transparency the vanish offers... fireline is not the most discrete from what I've noticed.

I also suggest 10/2 PowerPro.. casts great and is very strong... I also have a spool lined with 4lb Vanish for streams

My brother has some 3/<1 Power Pro on his rod. Actually casts really well and he had little trouble with landing a pretty good sized bass.

This weekend I was using Trilene XL 4lb test and my buddy was using Berkley Crystal 4lb test 1lb diameter. I had way to many problems and the worst thing he had was a cut from pulling his line off a stump. He also caught the most fish crazy I will be re-spooling up my reels with that or Power Pro 5lb test 3/4lb diameter.

I don't really see the reason it getting such small braided line... one of the main reasons for braid is decreased diameter with an increase in strength... and it just don't justify 3/<1... i'd rather just use flouro or mono at that point...

i've used Trilene XL and Smooth Casting, experienced alot of twist with both 4lb and 6lb. I now use Stren 6lb clear mono. The twist seems to be less than the trilene by quite a bit. Also, if line twist or line exploding off the reel is an issue, a reel with a wider space for line may help.

I put the 5# pp on my ultralight, and now use it 90% of the time for all my fishing. 2-3' of 12# Stren for a leader to prevent pike biteoffs and abrasion.

Stren Magnathin... I use a ton of 4lb magnathin that has the diameter of 2lb line on ultralights. The thinner mono cuts down on twist. I also use it in the 8lb = 6lb diameter size on my walleye rigs. The line has yet to dissapoint me, and is my go-to for mono.
