Which deep runners do you like

Recommended Posts

Last year started doing the trolling cranks using linecounters thing, I have Precision Trolling 4th edition, and pretty much all of my cranks run 18 feet or higher. What lures do you like for running deeper than 18 feet?

Or do you use the small dipseys?

or do you just weigh the sucker down with lead? if so, How do you know what depth your lure is running?

I use 14/4 PowerPro ...

Is this a new PP product?? Haven't seen 14/4 yet.

I'm with Hansen....lead / snap with smaller baits are often the ticket. Nice when the Taildancers / RR's are working on longline though.

I like, in order of preference, deep tail dancers, salmo hornets, and reef runners. Mostly that order because of the colors they come in that work best on the lake I normally fish. I use the yellow fireline 10/2. The smaller the diameter, the less resistance, the deeper you will get it to run. I like the yellow so I can see where the line touches the water as I troll. If the line starts to touch the water further back when speed and direction remain constant, you have picked up some weeds. I run a six foot or so 8 or 10lb leader at the lure and a small snap swivel.

Reef runners deep divers are great. I have used the small dipseys like those Big Jon small diving disks but i wouldn't use a deep diving lure with them

For deep running cranks I like the big tail dancers, reef runners, and deep diving husky jerks.

I run leadcore a lot too, usually with small cranks like hornets, jointed or glass shad raps, etc.

I've used dipseys for walleyes but I can't ever get rid of the feeling that the dipsy is costing me some bites ........

Try the real small ones with a 4-6foot leader.

I do that from time to time and I've had no problems.....I think

1 Deep Husky Jerk 12's. Far and away my favorite deep trolling crank

2 Deep Tail Dancers (9 size)

3 Minnow Rap in 9 size with a little snap wt, no luck with 11's though

I keep trying various Reef Runner 800's and have yet to catch a walleye with one. I know all about the tuning, and I get them to run true after some effort. Just haven't caught me a marble eye with one yet. They do dive right to the bottom though.

The new Salmo Super Deep Running Hornets H5SDR and the Salmo Bullheads get down without any needed lead or junk. The Bullhead and the Super Deep BD8SDR Salmo Bullhead is an overlooked bait that is hot for eyes.

One of my favorites is the Rattlin Rapala and also the Rat-L-Trap. They'll run pretty deep without much weight if you let out enough line, and to get deeper I usually add a bead chain sinker and monofilament leader.

Another rig I use quite a bit is a large bladed spinner run behind a bead chain sinker.

Does anybody here use jointed rapalas on lead?

How fast can you troll the jointed rapalas? I've heard some say you must troll slow with them. Are they slow trolls only?

Yes, they are one of my favorite baits on lead.

I never troll very fast with lead, regardless of the bait I have out. Most of my leadcore trolling is in the 1.8 to 2.3 range.
