As a Iowan transplanted in Mn and a life long Vikings fan that is the problem here. Too much pessimism on the sports teams. Draft is a gamble, qb being the big one.Bill Musgrave is a qb guru and I am sure he had Ponder in sight. Give the kid a chance. Brady was a 6 round pick after all.

People are fond of pointing that out. Find me another All-Pro QB in the league right now who was a 6th round pick. Or 5th. Or 4th.

Generalizing from outliers doesn't work very well.

It sounds like the reasoning behind Locker's accuracy struggle has been his footwork and mechanics. Gruden praised the kid as an exceptionally hardworking/smart individual who he forsees 'getting it right'. I'm not overly excited about Locker or Dalton, but it sounds like these are the guys we have to chose from (assuming we draft at 12 and don't trade down); of the two, I'd assume any NFL team would take the 235lb guy who ran a 4.59 at the combine (Locker) vs the other (Dalton). Plus dalton has red hair, just sayin lol.

Bottom line - please don't take one of these guys at the 12 hole, Vikes.

The guys on before the draft started were saying that his completion percentage was so low because his receivers couldnt get open and he had to throw it away quite a bit. Not my opinion, just regurgitating what I heard.

Ponder was a guy I had rated in the top 3 QB's in the draft and I had him rated higher than the 3 taken ahead of him. While I think they could have traded back and still got him, the fact is they can't anticipate who might jump a spot ahead of them and take the pick away so in the end they did what they needed to at the spot they had.

He has recovered from his surgery very well and played well enough to be the MVP of the senior bowl. At least now that we have another #7 on the team we can close the books on the Tjack experiment.

At least we didn't end up with Locker or Newton.

Regarding Locker. There aren't many quality defenses in college football. Nebraska had a very good secondary however. Jake Lockers stats against Nebraska:

Round 1: 4 of 20 for 71 yards and 2 pics

Round 2: 6 of 19 for 72 yards and 0 pics (they did win this game, but I think he had 1 completion in the first half, when the game was still in question).

Is that what you want at QB?

There are two problems with QB's who rely on their feet too much.

1. They get hurt.

2. They never fully develop their ability to read a defense, and fit a football in a mailbox.

repetition, repetition, repetition. It's about muscle memory, including the brain. Who has a better shot at being an all star short stop / 2nd baseman. The kid from Minnesota who sees a couple hundred ground balls a year, or the kid from Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, etc who sees 10,000?

Guys like Marino, Manning, Brady, etc. Don't run the ball, so they LEARN to read a defense and find the 4th guy in the progression. Guys like Vince Young, Dante Culpepper, Kordell Stewart, and Jake Locker make one read, and take off and run. They never realize that even though their receiver is blanketed, they can throw the ball short, and get an automatic interference call when the receiver tries to come back for the ball. They don't realize that even though their receiver is well covered, the defender's head is turned the wrong way, and you can zip it past his ear hole and still get a completion. No, they haven't worked on that, they look, and if the receiver isn't wide open by 2 yards (which they never are in the NFL), then they get happy feet and take off and run. That actually works for a little while (sometimes), but then guys like Culpeper, Young etc, eventually get a knee injury, and they're never the same. Locker might be cut from Mark Brunells cloth. Brunell, as I recall, led the NFL in QB rushing yardage early in his career. Then he took a knee injury, and was never the same. Locker has guts. He is a natural leader. He will be better than many. But he will take off and run, and he will get hurt, and he will NEVER lead his team to a superbowl.
