Berkley Trilene XL

It's really cool for me to see all of you that use good 'ol Berkley line. I live about 20 miles from where the stuff is made in Spirit Lake Iowa. Berkley is a great company that has been around for a long time. If you're in Spirit Lake some time check out their outlet store. Great deals on rods, reels, power bait and of course fishing line.

Trilene XL has been my choice of mono for spinning gear as long as I can remember. It's a little more limp that Trilene XT so it has less tendency to "spring" off my spool if it got slack. Trilene XT is more resistant to abrasion so it handles rocks better so I liked using it for river fishing with my baitcasting gear.

I don't know if Trilene is the best line out there, but it's for sure proven to be the best mono for the money for me since it came out.

I'm always willing to try new things. Now, when you have as many open and hardwater reels as I have, it costs a TON to respool them all, and that's even more expensive when you consider a failed experiment. So when I dipped into a new line, I'd spool one baitcaster and one spinning reel with it.

For mono, I've gone back to XL every time. One thing about all the "new" developments in mono is they tend to cost a lot more than XL/XT, but so far I haven't seen performance increases for the type of fishing I do with the "improvements," so nowadays it takes a lot to get me to even spool up anything else on my mono rigs. I feel the same way about the standard Firelines. When it comes to a superbraid, they are my standard.

The older I get, the less impressed I am with the latest newest rage in lures, line, rods/reels, etc. Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be perfect enough.

What did you switch to?

I've switched to several other kinds of lines for various reasons or techniques required. For example, I can go with Trilene Sensation for low stretch. I can go with Stren Original for flourescent visibility. I've even used Silverthread AN40, but it's too similar to XL except with an improvement in line strength consistency. There's nothing wrong with XL, it just doesn't suit me even for slip bobber fishing.

Been using Trilene XL since it came out in the 60's! I still spool all my mono rods with XL. I've tried other lines thru the years and was dissapointed as they never performed like XL!

I re-spool several times a year also so I always buy yhr 1000' spools! 2c

XL has never let me down. Break-offs are always operator error (poor knots or being too lazy to check for nicks when re-baiting).

The local retailer with the big rock wall inside sometimes has it on sale at 2 for $10. Berkley has a $5 rebate. How can you beat $2.50 a spool? I'd rather spend my money on bacon.

Tough to beat XL for simple mono uses. 6lb for bobber and jigging, 10lb for pulling stuff and shore fishing the river.

To get the rebate from richard's you need to call the Berkley Customer Service line and have them mail the form to you.
