thatoneguy
The new issue of In-Fisherman includes the 2010 Master Angler submissions. In the LMB section, the first entry is a 26" fish caught and released on Lake Kitchi (allegedly) last June by a Rod Whitman of Omaha, NE. I'm guessing beer was involved in that estimate but a measuring stick was not
swampbuck
Ha saw that too! The photo of the 24" fish looked like an 8+ lber soooo a 26" is how big? It was probably a DOG FISH
hockeybc69
Its only days away now.... All the reports of MN state record bass that were caught while pan fishing and subsequently released.... Of course, without pictures.
Superduty
You would think Infisherman would police this stuff better. I can't tell you how many times I have been at a tourney weigh in, and people talk about all the "6-7lb" bass in the bags. They rarely weigh more than 4 or 5lbs when they hit the scales! For some reason, the average person has a real tough time estimating the true weight of a bass.
hockeybc69
I dont get Infisherman, so I dont have anything to reference, but I assume it was slightly over estimated in size? Kinda like this one that was posted at Gander Mountain in Blaine a few years ago... I had to take a pic with my phone because it was so dang funny..... IBFishin2
Bwahahahaha... It's amazing how a 3 pounder can easily be 5 pounds... If not more.. Hahahaha.. Some of those pictures at Gander really cracks me up. Oh well, to each their own I guess
RumRiverRat
The is definitely a state record Smallmouth!
Craigums
That is a nice smallie though. When the guy weighed that smallie it showed 4.4lbs, he didn't believe his eyes so he weighed it again and to his amazement it showed ANOTHER 4.4lbs. Boy, was he surprised to find out it totaled 8.8lbs a new state record!
Nick Kuhn
I get people who come into my cube and really overestimate the size of the fish in my pictures. The usual claim I get is "looks bigger than the one I saw in the paper." They might be nice fish in the paper, but they often come paired with inflated measurements. mrklean
if its that easy to claim a state record by writing on paper then man ive been doing this fishing thing all wrong

BTL
The Lunker club page in Bassmasters frequently has "errors" like this too. Obvious 4lb smallies called 8lbers, 7lb largemouth called 12's. Good stuff!
HandGunner
Ive caught a 23 incher it was the size of my backpack only weighed 3 pounds if my scale is right lol its a old spring scale but the belly was really skinny so i would guess if it was a fat bass it coulda made 6 pounds. I love those you tube vids of ppl landing averege size bass and saying its 5-10 pounds when really it be lucky to break 2 or 3 pounds. I use to be like this when i first started bass fishing OMG OMG its gon be a good 5 pounds man OMG! (weigh in) ............ hmmmm 2 pounds? barley? ppl just needa quit over estimating and just accept the fact they are not going to catch a bass that big in MN that easily
Stick in Mud
I work on a launch on Mille Lacs in the summer, and we get pretty good at guesstimating the length of fish after measuring 500 of them. It's fun to listen to the estimates before we actually put it on the tape....a fish that's estimated at 25'' will frequently measure out to barely over 20''. And the fish that are "over 28" are almost never more than 25''. Makes you wonder about all those fish stories you hear about in the bar after the fishing's done. gritsnham
That is just classic...there is a good chance that smallies got a bit heavier after she rolled around in the snow for awhile to build uo som e weight!Carmike your post makes it sound like you have seen a few smallies out of mille lacs over 25 inches?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I will admit I would freak out if I caught one over 25...had a few 20-21in smallies and those things were bruisers.
thatoneguy
i'm guessing carmike was referring to walleyes caught on mille lacs. a 25" smallie would almost certainly be a state record with room to spare.
slipperybob
I've caught a 22" smallmouth but with like a half a tail. Old looking thing and all the fins were detoriated. If it was a healthy smallmouth, I'd think it may have gotten 24"+. The old sickly looking smallmouth weighed probably in about 3 lbs only. Nice big head, very small and frail looking starved body. I'm just gonna claim it was 28 inches now. LOL's

hawgchaser
Don't know why the guy made such a fuss!! I caught three MN state record smallies last June. Ask anybody who was at the Old Brick Inn in Battle Lake at closing time...they'll remember.
Basscat
Maybe he's 7ft tall and weighs 350 pounds. In that case the fish might be big, but looks small next to such a big guy!
ducksnbucks
I went online to In-Fisherman to check it out and some of the 22-23" bass in pictures aer bigger than that LM Bass. Although its a nice bass, I would be suprised if it makes 22". So funny to see the length predictions of some people!
