Top 5 All Purpose Rapala's

Rapala is offering a buy 5 get 1 free mail in rebate. A laughable promotion if you ask me; but hell I am going to buy 5 Rapalas this year so I might as well partake. Got me thinking though, if you could only have 5 rapalas in your tackle box what would they be. Give the model, color and the fish you are targeting with them. I am going to have to think of that for a bit.

Our family is already jacked up for open water, all it takes is this sunshine to get our blood going, even if its 30 degrees.

number 5 shad rap in silver (catches everything)

number 10 husky jerk in tennessee shad (walleyes and bass)

if i could only have two those'd be it

but if I had to choose more,

I'd go with a DT-16 (brighter color), a DT-4 in bluegill, (both bass, though pike love them) and a rattlin rap in whatever color you like

Hard to go wrong with the husky jerk, shad rap, or DT lines

I'd take 5 CDJs. If I'm being picky, two big ones in black and gold (I think it's just called "gold".) and three smaller ones in whatever colors I can get my grubby little paws on.

The CDJ's aren't available in the U.S. anymore, and maybe not anywhere. This is pretty upsetting for me since I have ONE large black and gold one that I kind of don't want to use since I might lose it. Of course, there's not much reason to have it in the arsenal if it's not going to be used. This problem doesn't quite keep me up at night, but it's close... cry

DT6 firetiger

#6 X-Rap Shad black silver

#5 Rattlin Rap blue/silver

#5 Rattlin Rap black/silver

#5 Rattlin Rap firetiger

Rattlin Raps have got to be one of the more versatile baits I've used. I can always seem to get them to work.

At the rate I lose rattlin raps, I refuse to pay $10 a lure.

The question is: why are you losing them, and why do you do nothing to fix it?

I didn't lose a single lure last season, and it's all due to running just a simple 6-12 inches of 25lb fluorocarbon leader.. and also bringing the swimming goggles along for the two times I retrieved snags :P

I already sent in my rebate, but I have low expectations on the free lure. The whole "*Lure size, style and color will vary" makes me wonder what overstock they are trying to get rid of.

That said, if I could only have 5 it would be:

#7 Shad Rap in perch

Jointed #7 Shad Rap in silver

Jointed #5 Shad Rap in bleeding chartreuse

Jointed #11 Floating in chartreuse

#9 Floating in firetiger

#12 Deep Husky Jerk in Blue/Chrome

#8 Balsa Shad Rap in Silver/Black

#10 Xrap in Ghost Pearl (or white?)

#9 Tail Dancer Deep in metallic perch

#9 Minnow Rap in hot steel

It will depend on which type of lake and depth the fish are at of course. On the lake I fish 90% of the time (deep and clear), fish are in the 14-24 foot depths for most of the soft water season. I've caught more fish with those 5 lures than the other 200 lures I have combined. Confidence goes a long way in fishing it seems.

I've got boxes full of Raps and tried them all. I only use three styles in different sizes and colors.

#5 & #7 Shad Rap in Silver - Perch - Fire Tiger - Tolling for walleyes

#5 _ # 7 & #9 Floating Minnow in Silver - Orange - Red/Silver - Surface for small or Lg mouth bass

#5 & #7 Ratlin Rap Red - Fire Tiger Casting shorelines for walleyes

+1 on Rattlin Raps ... they are dirt cheap and they catch everything. I would add bone color for low light conditions or stained water.

I've got a few of the Bones but for some reason I never tried them. I see them in the stores and end up buying one or two only to realize I've already got some. Then on the lakes, I always reach for the same two colors first and the lowly Bone gets ignored.

I need to give it some attention this summer. It looks like a great low light bait.
