Crankbait Knots

I have seen some people tie a loop knot onto their cranks and I have seen others just tie their normal palomar/improve clinch knots to the ring. What knot is best for tying on for a crank to have it move better through the water? For me, when I see the loop knot on the o-ring, it doesn't give me enough trust to think that it won't break off so I'm kind of wary at tying a loop knot. But some people say that it makes the lure move more naturally. I just tie a improve clinch on mines and it doesn't make a different. What are your guys' thoughts?

I always use a Duolock or Crosslock snap on cranks. Doesn't hurt the action a bit, and makes changing baits easier. No muss, no fuss, never had one fail, although I do replace them when they start to get worn.

Should note - I use just a snap, never a snap swivel...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

I always use a Crosslock snap, it comes from Fall walleye fishing trolling cranks where I'm looking for the right action and running depth and color trifecta, meaning there's a lot of swapping lures out.

Loop knot for walk the dog type lures and on suspending crank baits. Palomer knot to an oval ring for all other cranks. If a crank doesn't have an oval ring to tie to I put one on. I haven't tried the snap swivel dealy because I always felt it may look a bit more unnatural but I may have been overthinking that one. I spose a crank doesn't really get over analyzed too often... its usually moving right along, so the snap doesn't really get noticed. I'm assuming...? Anyway, loop knot on the two methods I mentioned allow the lure to really walk the dog with freedom and the suspending crank will IMO suspend better...

I use Norman Speed clips -- they're small, light, and they don't hurt the action of the bait at all. They're also very secure and they will not open up.

I tie the speed clip on with a palomar knot and am good to go, and it's quick and easy to change baits.

I know lots of guys like Crosslocks and Duolocks, but I have seen them opened up 3-4 times by fish --- never by bass, but by walleyes and pike caught trolling cranks.

I usually stick with the Palomar and have not noticed a difference between that and using a loop knot. I have become a firm believer in the oval split ring though and think they make a huge difference...gonna have to give the snaps a go this year as well now.

Used to use the Bowline Hitch on those with only an eye. I have shied way, but now with all the good reports on snaps, I will have to try that this summer...getting a crank back in the water is better than taking up the time to retie.
