Do people go fishing by themselves this time of year?

Sometimes I enjoy fishing by myself in the summer. Do you ever ice fish by yourself? Maybe you want the peace of being alone, or maybe you just don't have anyone to go with you on a spur of the moment trip out. This time of year, is safety really a concern, as far as being alone?

I love ice fishing by myself. When I do, I try to make sure there is someone else out on the lake too. Happened this year that I was out alone...with no one else out on the lake. Turned around and went with another lake.

I enjoy the quiet time, and fish by my self quite often in both the winter and summer. I work 45miles from where i live so i will have all my gear along and ready to stop at a lake on the way home from work.

If i drive onto a lake and there is no one in site...I'm in heaven! Look at the lake and pick my best spots to start drilling first. Drill as many holes as it takes...and there's nobody around to crowd you!

I fish alone almost exclusively. I really enjoy the time by myself, not to mention I get to tell my own story about the fishing trip.

As for safety, I do let people know where I'm going, and what time I'm expecting to be back. I also won't set foot on the lake without my cell phone and some necessities for basic survival should the truck not start or if I get wet...

Im probably split 50/50 or maybe a little bit more time spent alone. Fishing alone you have the ability to do what you want when you want but having someone else along to share the expierence is nice, too.

I dont know a lot of people that like to ice fish and if I always waited for someone else to be able to go when I wanted to go Id almost never get out.

I also fish alone a lot of the time. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I just tell her that I don't need someone to hold my hand through life. I take the neccesary precautions of course but the peace and quiet is unsurpassable. I also duck and grouse hunt on my own as well. Sometimes it's nice not to have to worry about other people when your doing what you love, sounds a little selfish but a little me time can go a long way.

I fish alone probably 90% of the time. It helps keep me at peace. Plus, no one knows where my hotspots are. Only downside is there isn't anyone to take pictures of the big ones. Good thing cameras have timers on them.

I am almost alwayse go solo. It gives me a chance to try new things and not feel bad if I didd'nt catch any fish, when I have my friends with me they alwayse look to me to pick spots and presentations, when I'm alone I try crazy things like fishing really deep or even in a bunch of shallow standing weeds, plus there is no one to say "I want to go home" It's all you....

I too am for fishing alone. Downside as already mentioned is the picture thing. My camera has no timer and taking a pic of a fish laying on the ice or on the bottom of the boat isn't as appealing. I love the peace and the freedom to go when I want, move, try what ever, and leave when I want as well. From time to time though excursions with friends and the kids can be fun. But the peace man.... it does it. I'm a highschool Biology and Anatomy teacher and have 148 kids walk in and out of my room each day not to mention three little kids of my own at home (6,7,and 8) so if I can get out alone it is a beautiful thing. Even if I have to peel myself out ot bed at 4 am at times... its worth it.

I love fishing alone, summer or winter. I think thats why I like ice fishing Canada so much. Very, very seldom will you ever have to share a lake with someone else. I usually try to make sure I'm fishing within 4 or 5 miles of someone else in our group, though, if possible.

Its nice being able to make your own decisions and not have to worry about keeping someone else happy. I don't have to put as much emphasis on actually catching fish when I'm alone, either. I can try new techniques and spots without feeling bad if they don't work.

I probably fish alone 75% of the time and absolutely love it! In my past experiences I seem to do better for some reason when I am alone versus when I am with others. I am never worried about conditions as I check as I go and usually hit the same 6-10 locations every winter. Its just nice to get away from all distractions and have alone time to think about life and enjoy the world around us.

All year long people say - I'll go, then you tell them 5am and it'll be about -10 and away you go by yourself. If everybody went that said they wanted to go a person would need 15 houses.

if my son is already in bed before i am getting off work.....you bet i am headed to the shack alone....i get all night to myself and actually get to fish without his help in the morning. always make sure to test lp and co2 detectors, have the cell phone and computer charged with good reception, and pay attention to weather forecasts. as others have mentioned...one or two of the dogs are always with!

i am another solo guy 75% of the time. i do invite my brothers, dad, and even my mom almost every time i go out but with everyone working and having different schedules i spend a lot of time alone or with the dog. even when i lived in ND and had a buddy who i would go with all the time, we still both brought our own portables and would fish in different houses and sometimes even split up on the lake to try different spots and then call the other if they were on the fish.

I like fishing alone about half the time. Although it seems like the weird stuff always happens to me when I'm alone and forget my camera to prove it. Such as the ice groaning more than I've ever heard it before...down right spooky. Or the time I "felt" something behind the Clam Pro, turned around, and there was a red fox 5 feet away checking me out (I knew I wasn't in danger, but I still jumped about 4 feet in the air). You know this stuff wouldn't happen if there were witnesses.

+1 on this post!

I ice fish alone almost 90% of the time. I typically duck and grouse hunt alone as well. My schedule can be a little weird at times and Fridays are the most convenient day for me usually, and given that I didn't grow up here so I don't know a ton of anglers and hunters around here, I can't often find someone to go with anyway. My dad will open water fish with me a lot in the summer, but that's about it.

I love being out there alone. I like to hike alone, I like being out in the dark alone, I like setting out dekes alone when I hunt...pretty much everything. I don't think ice fishing alone is any more dangerous than ice fishing with someone. And for my mental health, maybe better. grin

Sometimes when I do fish with someone else, they have to leave for this reason or that or don't want to do what I was hoping to do, so being alone avoids that. If I want to move around a lot or wait out a slow bite, no problem.

Of course, my son is getting to the age that he's showing some interest in ice fishing (and grouse hunting) from time to time, so I have to train myself to appreciate fishing with someone else. He's been out with me 3 times this year, and his patience is improving all the time. smile

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
