I think it's relative to the lake and size of structure.

If you're in the metro on a popular 300 acre lake and there's only one deep hole, yea you should be prepared to rub elbows and have portables 10' apart on that spot.

On the flip side if you're on Leech Lake and are the only people in a bay that is full of great spots I think that's pretty bad to come right up next to somebody and start drilling holes. But the law is 10' and it's a public lake for anyone to use so whatchagunnado.

On the flip side of all this, I was out 2 winters ago on Phelps Bay (Minnetonka) on New Years Day in my porty. It was about 4-ish in the afternoon and I was set up for the evening bite. Some guy comes out with a huge perm, honestly it was probably 10' x 20', and set up within 5 feet of me. I had to go out and move my auger because it was in their way. I couldn't believe it, it's not like Phelps Bay has limited spots to catch pannies.

A few years ago I would have made a fuss, and maybe if I was on a special walleye spot I still would have, but in this case I just moved to another spot. I figure it's not worth getting my blood pressure up over pannies. Fishing is supposed to be fun, right? wink

I know for me it's not separation anxiety or lack of maps currently it's simply a lack of lake knowledge. I'm currently in a new area to me so the only areas I feel comfortable traveling are previously traveled lines. In talking with people in the area many of the lakes around me have springs and spots to avoid whether it be on truck, ATV/Sled, or foot. I'm just more comfortable with the masses but I'm setting up 25 feet away from other perms or portables but still only in areas that others have traveled.

Guess for me I just feel safer till I can talk to people and get a working knowledge of these lakes and can't do that unless I talk to people fishing them. Being the new guy kinda sucks, not trying to hone in on anybodies fishing just trying to gain the knowledge.

I love this post...bikeoutback, if you sit next to me I'll be happy to tell you how the bite is doing and help you out. I also respect the law but if people are out 10 feet from me I like to get to know each other and get some tidbits of my own. Yes-setting up right on top of each other is a joke but half the fun is being out there with other people. And people who can't stand ten other people by them and saying fishing is no good, why do I see 10-15 people in a group who are friends pounding away fish all sitting with 5 feet of each other?

Respect the laws but have some fun out there guys...get to know each other

p.s. Having to move your own equipment so someone can set up is a little to far for me or using their equipment as a table...but an "unoccupied" permie can make for a nice wind break...just saying

Sitting on the ice a few guys come over to where we fishing and started checking holes with the vexi that we had drilled. I did find this annoying but didnt make a fuss about it. My buddy said we shouldve asked for gas money. I personally feel more accomplished finding fish in holes I drilled.

It kind of irks me that some guy with an 8x8 permie can legally "own" 324 square feet of lake, even if they are not there.

Maybe you can angle drill under him, and catch all them lurking fish hiding there he is obviously hording up?

wink

The truth is, most perms are where they are primarily just because it convenent..and not purely because it's the hottest spot on the lake. And that is especially true this year.

So if your portable, be portable, don't sit and wait on them to find you next to that guys perm. How more self defeating can you get?

Lurking around somebody's front porch is just plain discourteous to boot, like a darn buzzard circling around looking for scraps.

This happened to me the last time I went out! Two real nice guys came up and started checking my string of holes that I was jumping between. I was a little annoyed, but figured I was being "over-sensitive." The fish weren't biting that well anyway so I told them where the rest of my holes were and they were welcome to them. I went to another spot and slaughtered the fish there wink

Sweet; more fishing math fun! Looking to find out the square footage of the 8 by 8 house with a 10 foot setback for other houses. The house will be able to cover an 8x8 square on its own, plus 4) 8x10 rectangles, plus 4) quarter circles with a 10 ft radius at each of the 4 corners (or just put them together to make 1 circle with a 10 ft radius).

8 x 8 = 64

8 x 10 = 80 x 4 = 320

10 x 10 x 3.14159 = 314.159 (or just 314)

64 + 320 + 314 = 698 square feet

698 Square feet that they "own". For reference, that's just like being in the center of a circle with just under 15' from you to the edge.

Mcgurk you took it too far, must be a math teacher or something... grin

Nope, just the son of a math teacher. I don't think it's taking it too far; I took it just far enough if you want the right answer!
