I've always wanted to fire this out there, realize I'm all about letting young bucks having the chance to get older, "Can't eat the horns". lol but yet 479,000 of us tomorrow and none of us would pass on him. What a beauty and many of us will dream tonight about seeing something like that and then many will dump that Y buck by 9:00 AM tomorrow. Great deer and good luck guys.

The Y buck or the spike will put good meat on the table. I Will pass on the basket 6 and dump the spike. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, many people will be just a happy with a nice doe as he is with a record breaker. Good luck to everone tomorrow-hope to see his grandson in my woods!

In our area of Northern MN most 1 1/2 year old bucks have only spikes or 3 point racks(total). By passing on a basket 6 and shooting a spike you are possibly taking a big 10 out of the gene pool. After a buck reaches 2 1/2 you will have a much better chance of seeing what his true potential is.

Our group trys to pass all 1 1/2 year old bucks and instead try and take that mature doe and larger bucks. the 2 1/2 year old buck is fair game- usually a rack around ear width with short beams and points. Every year I get 1 or 2 bucks on trail cam that are really nice- the guy's kind of don't believe they are from our area. I also only get 3 or 4 bucks total on my camera in a year. I only get them out for the 2 weeks leeding up to rifle season and set them on reocurring scrapes.

As far as the Wisconsin buck he is huge. It takes a lot of control to pass on some of the nice young deer to give them that extra year or 2 to blow up into monsters. Congrats to the Lucky hunter(Luck is where preperation and opportunity meet) I think that a famos fisherman from Brainerd used that line.

Good Luck to all this MN firearms hunters- Be Safe and Dream of that big buck tonight.

Just to be fair a lot of Northern MN bucks don't show their true potential until 3.5 or older. When they are young they put a lot of energy into filling out their frame and their racks can suffer those first 1-3 years. We also don't have near the nutrition in the area so that makes for a lot of spikes and very small basket 6 or 8 pointers as two year olds.

In Northern Carlton County 80%+ of the bucks you see are spikes. We have very bad nutrition. The nearest crops to me are about 10 miles. Alot of swamp and brush, we do have a few monster swamp bucks, but not many. I have shot one spike that was 175lbs derssed, my guess is 2.5 yrs old or even 3.5.

Yeh right Oldendays, wish I could sit with ya tomorrow, hang on forget that 10pt 200lber, should be a nice spike coming.I'm sure that 6 won't taste as good as a spike. Not many will be as happy with a doe over a state record buck, put that to the polls, your an exception to that one, but I wish you good luck and that your knife gets used.
