Would you mount this?

I think you can second guess just about anything but once you have done something you can't undo it.

If presented with a similar scenario, I say do what you want to do. If you want to mount a doe head then go for it. If you want to cut the antlers off a 600lb tirty pointer do that too.

It's your deer and your experience and you should memorialize it your way rather than what random folks on the internet have to say about it.

A euro mount would have been nice. Don't worry, you'll probably get one to mount this year.

Gosh, look at the date on that photo. Jeans, no gloves, no hat and a thin jacket - I forgot how warm it was for the opener last year.

Here is the deal, It is your deer you do what you want and only what you want. You know better then anyone else what you want. They also have to remember they do not have to pay for it to be done. They don't do them for free!

No don't head mount it, you look like a young enough guy that if you put in your time you will be rewarded some day with a bigger buck and then you won't have that wish I didn't mount that smaller one, it'll happen, it could happen in 2 days. You even mentioned a tad bigger, save the money and some day you'll know this 1 is the mack daddy, and he can hang right beside your plaque, nice buck by the way !

I'd have done the same thing. Plaque mount vs full head/shoulder.

I've priced the head/shoulder mount if/when I get the big boy and most places charge $425-$500 from the little looking I did. I personally can't afford that right now and its gonna be a hard sell with the wife to pull out $500 to mount a deer that she doesn't want to look at anyways.

Probably going to be plaque mounts for me until the deer of a lifetime comes by, then I'll dig deep to find the money and then do it before the wife finds out.

Speaking of that there is an 18 pointer hanging out in my hunting area right now, might have to start looking for the cash on monday when I get back.

To be honest, there is no way I would consider shooting that deer. I passed up a 10 pointer that probably would have scored in the 130" - 140" range 2 nights ago in my stand (...but I hunt in Buffalo County, WI - where most hunters won't use their buck tag on anything under 140-150" due to the number of large bucks) I do respect any hunter that harvests a deer regardless of size. Congratulations on your buck, and I hope that with whatever decision you make on your trophy will tell a story that you are proud of!

I think that if it is a memorable hunt, mount it no matter what the size of rack. I got my first bow buck mounted and he is 115, my wifes first buck which is 114 with a little kicker on the G2 and an acorn on the other G2. Pretty cool rack. But again not a monster but it was her first buck. I screwed up on that deal too. When I gutted it I didn't think she would have wanted it mounted so when I gutted it I cut it up pretty high. So I had to get another cape. So that is still an option, getting a cape this time of year should be no problem.
