Abu Garcia Revo Toro - Opinions?

What do you guys think about Abu Garcia's REVO TORO as a musky reel? I've read many reviews, and most people say they love it, however there are some that don't. I've had a C3 6500 and a C4 5600 and they both burned out in about one season, and I didn't fish all that much and did not catch very many huge fish.

One friend says the Revo Toro is a good reel, but not a musky reel. He thinks it will burn out quickly using big baits. I pull double 10-blades often and I'd like to get a reel that can handle them. I bought a new Revo Toro for $140 (regular $280), and i just want to know if it is worth that.

What do you think? Does anyone have this reel?

Hiya -

I got one of the first ones available, and have used it pretty hard since. Haven't had any issues with it at all. Great reel I think. I don't use it for Cowgirls or anything but fish a lot of standard-size bucktails with mine and it's been flawless.

I think you got a great deal frankly. The guts of a Toro are way different than a 6500.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Wow, thanks for the quick, helpful responses. Sounds like this reel is working well for you. If it lasts me two seasons or even one full season without having to send for repairs, it will be worth it.

If you want to throw big blades like double 10's and 13's then maybe consider the bigger baitcaster like the calcuttas, but regular bucktails, crankbaits, topwaters, and anything in between this reel is a champ, I have the HS60 and it burns like nobodys buisness, but with bigger blades the crank on it causes some fatigue after bulging blades for a couple hours, then you will want a power handle for sure. One thin I really like the smaller handle for is jerkbaits/wtd that require a faster retrieve like the undertakers, and the hellhounds

I have 3-Revo Toro's and have put power handles on all them and use them for both muskies and bass tackle with the exception that I highly recomend you NOT use these for the #10 and #13 bladed lures unless you get the Winch (blue) otherwise i'm on my second year and loving them to death. If they make it one more year all my "C" class reels might be up for sale....two thumbs up!!!!

Love mine - I don't know how I'll ever go back to a reel that isn't low profile after fishing with it. I have one of the red Abu 7000C3s and that thing feels like a cement brick after fishing with the Toro for a few hours.

I don't burn any big blades with it (or any big blades during the day at all for that matter, it just isn't much fun after a dozen casts when carple tunnel is already setting in!), but that thing can SMOKE a small buck tail. Fill up the spool as much as you can, put the power handle on it and I think you'll quickly love using it. I also love it for slow rolling the cowgirls at night - I think it works perfectly.

I went throw two different reels last year and have one being fix at Abu right now. I don't think these reels are able to handle big blades but then again I don't there is a reel that won't get burnt out from those lures if you use them enough. I say the Calcutta is the most durable reel out there. Thats just my opinion. For 140 dollars you should be happy with your reel. I'm pretty rough on my reels.

I've only used my Toro for about a month and had a thumb-bar issue. Can't blame that on the big blades I don't think. That said, I sent it back to Iowa on Friday and got the a new one shipped back today. I'd rather not have to send reels back (3 7Ks and 1 Toto in the past 3 years) but every time I have Abu has taken good care of me. I could also add up the freight on the 4 shipments back to Abu and could have upgraded to a Trinidad I guess... As far as the big blades go, at risk of being called whimp and getting kicked out of the big nuts musky club, if I'm "burning" double 10's or 13's with any reel my arms will give out way faster than any reel.

I love mine. It is very smooth. The only problem I have had with it is that the pin across the reel has come out during a long day of fishing, which must be caused by some vibration. I throw blades, bulldogs, everything with that reel. I have even trolled big Jakes with it.

I have the same problem, TrophyEyes. My pin has come unscrewed a few times mid day and I never think to bring a small screw driver out to really tighten it down so it's a bit of a hastle after it happens in the middle of a day. I guess that's why I have a couple of rods though. Other than that issue I've had no trouble with this reel, had it cleaned and looked at at the expo and it's been running like new all season.

I bought one this year. So far I like it, but haven't used it for anything big yet. I'm using a 7000 for big blades and bulldawgs right now, but man... those things are a tank. I might start using my Toro Revo for larger blades a little more.

Anyone use a Saltist for big blades and/or bulldawgs? They look like good reals for the money and I've heard good things.

I run a Toro 60HS and like it a lot. Great all around reel. All my other reels are Saltists and I think they are a great reel for the money. They can be finicky to cast with a full spool but otherwise I've enjoyed mine and have really put them through the paces the last few seasons.
