agree. chilly needs to tighten up the belt on everybody and that's been my thoughts all along about granting favre the ability to leave the team in limbo. pretty soon more are going to want to skip practices and training camps.

You can forget about shortening the leash after the circus arrived in town last August. I saw that leash flying out the Escalade's window after picking up Brett.

If you extend extra latitude for your star QB, why wouldn't you give the same latitude to your star RB? And on down the line to your best-est waterboy... Doesn't matter much if we keep on winning.

Agreed, we will be fine in the end, but where does it end in terms of the "long leash" treatment? Chilly wants the persona of "tough guy coach" but he operates on the back end like Tice did...a "players coach." Last I remember, that didn't work out too well. And yes, I get that Favre is a special case, but humoring him jeopardizes the integrity of our core discipline regardless of how much we want and need him to come back.

AP is fantastic, too, no one denies that, but according to quotes from many team players, #4 has earned the right to skip camp. I doubt as many believe that #28 has earned that right, as well, regardless of what he brings to the table.

They were talking about Peterson not attending this mini camp at least a week before the camp started. I think he had a note from Chilly that gave him permission to miss the June mini-camp. wink

IMO mini camps are more for publicity than actual training anyways. Most times Chilly is dressed up funny & allowing the media to photo. Last year he wore some man wig thing. As far as I know the players doing their off season workout routine the week before is more "training" than they get at these mini camps.....

Besides Farve, how many others players had a note from Chilly to miss class?

BNS grin

Ok, its the dead of winter, you have something important celebration in your honor back home (very important), their is a sales training "pep-up" seminar (nothing that gains you much, just something that is done every year), you request to have time off during seminar, get "No".

Would you have more respect for your Boss if he said sternly "No"?

Would your boss understand and give you the ok? Then would you consider him as just letting you & your fellow employees "just run around"????

Childress upset with Peterson's minicamp absence

Adrian Peterson and Brett Favre are the Vikings' two most dynamic offensive players, but that doesn't mean the same rules apply to both.

Adrian Peterson and Brett Favre are the Vikings' two most dynamic offensive players, but that doesn't mean the same rules apply to both.

Coach Brad Childress made it clear he was unhappy Peterson will miss all three days of the Vikings' mandatory minicamp so he can attend a parade in his honor.

"The work is here," Childress said after Friday's workout.

The fourth annual "Adrian Peterson Day" is Saturday in his hometown of Palestine, Texas. Childress pointed out this was not a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Peterson.

"I just know that there's a bunch of guys here," Childress said. "This has a term 'mandatory' for a reason and the work is here, period. This is the fourth annual Adrian Peterson Day. I don't know if it's going to be like every year that they are going to have that, but we're going to have this, too. The same thing I told [rookie running back] Toby Gerhart, way before we decided on drafting him. This minicamp was on this date. I know he's going to go back and walk in graduation. This [camp] was going to be here."

Favre and defensive end Ray Edwards, a restricted free agent who won't sign his tender until next week, were the only other veteran players not in attendance. Gerhart will only miss Sunday.

While the decision to allow Favre to stay away from Winter Park as the quarterback decides if will play a 20th NFL season might lead Peterson to believe he also should get special treatment, Childress said that should not be the case.

"That is a special circumstance," Childress explained. "I don't think Adrian is batting around retirement in his mind. It's a special set of circumstances. You can say is it special? Is everything equal? Obviously it is not. That is just the way it is. It's a matter of fact and everybody understands that on our side of the equation."

Peterson hasn't taken part in the Vikings' offseason program, electing to train in Houston rather than be part of Organized Team Activities. The OTAs are optional. The decision to skip this camp -- Childress' understanding is that Peterson won't be at Sunday's practice -- exposes Peterson to disciplinary action from the team. He faces a maximum fine of $9,442.

Asked if this was an excused absence, Childress said: "That is something that we will talk about upstairs."

Carol Pegues, who is Peterson's aunt and serves as the organizer for "Adrian Peterson Day," said the day honoring her nephew was planned right after the season. Nonetheless, Childress said Peterson did not inform him of the conflict until this past Wednesday or Thursday, only a couple of days after Peterson had arrived at Winter Park.

Childress admitted he had been shown a website with the parade information, so this did not come as a surprise.

"I had an inkling," he said. "I didn't know if he was going to come out here and practice [Friday] afternoon and catch a late flight. I didn't know how that was going to work."

Peterson, who was fifth in the NFL with 1,383 rushing yards last season after leading the league in 2008, is certain to be under the microscope even more because of his issues with fumbling. He has 16 fumbles, including 10 lost, in the past two regular seasons. He also had two fumbles (none lost) in the NFC title game at New Orleans.

The NFL Network showed footage of Peterson carrying a 14-pound football filled with sand on Monday at Winter Park.

Obviously, there could be a question whether Peterson is not pleased with his situation and is expressing his unhappiness by boycotting this camp.

"Not from my standpoint," Childress said when asked if this is more than a scheduling conflict.

Peterson's agent, Ben Dogra, did not return calls Friday.

Peterson's teammates, meanwhile, did not seem all that concerned by his absence.

"He's got to do what he's got to do," tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said. "I just know he's already put in a lot of work. I know he's not going to come out of shape. I know he's putting in his work on and off the field when it comes to his books and his plays. I'm not really worried about Adrian Peterson not being here."

I guess no one here ever takes off of work for anything.

I'm trying to get off of work for a half hour tonight for picture night for my son's little league team that I coach and I can tell you that I am POed that I can't leave.
