Coleman stove issue

I have a liquid fuel Coleman stove and lately it has been acting weird.

It leaves black suite on the bottom of the pan. Even worse, it "explodes" once in awhile. It makes a high pitch squeal, then a loud pop and the flame goes out.

What's up with it? Can I fix it?

Sounds like you need a new "generator" - the thing that goes inside the tube coming from the tank, it helps vaporize the fuel. The fitting on the end of the tube just unscrews to replace it. I haven't used a liquid fuel Coleman for a number of years, but the "generator" used to be an easily available part. WalMart and KMart used to stock them but I doubt if they do any more - most any outdoor "outfitter" store should have them, maybe bait and more shops. I believe the 2 burner and 3 burner used different part numbers.

You could try cleaning the generagtor with some fine steel wool. There's a brass rod inside and you take it out and buff it off. If you screw up the needle on the end you've ruined it. Coleman sells the parts on line if you can't find them at a store - at least the used to. You can also find a converter to swith it over to propane if you can't find the parts.

New generator. Make sure your fuel is clean.....use a little felt filtered funnel.

I just did the bing and found one for $15 at Dick's. Bought mine probably 40 years ago and it works like a champ. Instant start and best of all no spilled fuel.

I used to have one of those liquid fuel Coleman stoves and most of the time it would run good but then sometimes you'd get the sooty flame, sometimes you'd get too much fuel coming out and have a fire in the bottom, sometimes you couldn't get the darn thing lit, then you had to wait for the flame to burn right. Then my brother-in law adviced me to get a propane fired stove, the kind that runs on the two pound cylinders - best decision ever!!!

My current propane stove fires right up with a match, you're cooking in 30 seconds, nice even flame right off the bat. And the propane stove are cheap, less than $40. Junk that other one!! I especially wouldn't throw good money after bad, as in buying a new regulator. Spend a little more and get the propane stove!!!

I have both and the propane is handier, but the White Gas gets your coffee hot much much faster!

And liquid fuel is a lot less weight per hour of use when packing in the BWCA.

As I posted by answer I went to the Coleman HSOforum to see if they sold the propane adapter for the white gas stove. I don't think they even sell white gas stoves any more - or maybe I just didn't wander around the HSOforum enough.

As for the guy who says dump it and buy new - you can get the job done for $15 and have the same as a new one.

Saw that they are not actually made by Coleman. Found this on Amazon: Century® Propane Stove Regulated Converter $14.99

Going to order one so I don't need to toss out my stove.

I put a Century brand propane converter on my Coleman stove 20 years ago and other than cleaning the orafice once, haven't had any problems.

I looked at Fleet and ended up just ordering it from Amazon. Would have preferred to get it local, even if that means Walmart.

Come to think of it, I bet Gander sells them too.
