Early season morel sightings

Anyone check their early spots yet? Reading a couple blogs on the net, guys are reporting finding small greys as far north as Rochester right now!!!!

With this rain and warm weather, there might be a few popping by the weekend...

I might get out this weekend and take a look myself.

I have never found any this early but I do believe that there are some out there. Too small to be worth picking though. Give it another week or so and you might find some eaters.

I would be up for that Elwood. I owe you anyways! It might be tough finding a time that will work though...we just bought a house and we move in on Saturday. The next few weeks might be kind of crazy. Touch base with me late April or early May.

Little morels popping around Mankato area.

I'm new to morel hunting. If they're popping up around the metro, when should I expect them in Midwestern Minnesota? Specifically around Ottertail County.

I'm actually kinda glad they are starting early. I am leaving in two weeks on a 10 day vacation so I would normally miss prime time for big yellows.

The woods are loaded, my wife's uncle and aunt picked close to 400 today in Western WI.

I am going tomorrow since they left several large areas unpicked.

I love having private land to hunt mushrooms on.

I live in Eden Prairie. Went out to the garden to turn over the soil and what did I find... a couple of 2 inch greys hanging out in the sunshine. Looks like they are starting.

Its not gonna be much of a season unless we start to get some moisture.The shrooms I found were in good shape, nothing dry but the area needs to get a nice rain storm to get things going good.

Deitz or anyone for that matter - with the rain coming, can you give a timeline for when the morels will be ready after a rain? Is it best to get in the woods right after the rain or wait a couple of days?

From my experience I believe they need a little time to 'grow.' So, if it rains Saturday I will be looking hard Wednesday.

After seeing what they picked I should not have bothered making the trip.

Looking at what they had I estimate that they had 250 tops, not even close to the 400 they claimed. The majority were small, they should have waited 3 or 4 more days to pick.

If they keeping picking everything in sight there will not be much left to reproduce.

I went down to Whitewater last weekend for trout opener and looked for shrooms with no luck. I did catch a bunch of browns and kept my 5 fish limit. When I got home Sunday I went out to the compost bin to throw some in some heads and guts and found my first ever morel growing right out in the open in the dirt where my veggie garden was last summer. It was the only one. I picked it yesterday, but wasn't sure if I should've waited for it to get bigger. The cap was completely out of the soil, but not much stem showing. How much of the shroom is edible? When I picked it there was maybe a half inch of stem with a ball still stuck in the ground.
