Schollmeier
Is this a redhorse? Caught on a size 8 burnt orange bugger. Also longnose or shortnose gar? Catch these on white woolly buggers. 1st of the year, but not the last!!!! The Redhorse is a River Redhorse. One of 6 species of redhorse found in MN and WI. It is the second largest species (right after Greater Redhorse). Generally found in larger rivers. Congrats - that is not a common catch in our area at all! And a pretty nice sized one to boot! Actually they are rare enough that they are illegal to harvest in WI. The Gar is a Longnose. Pretty common, especially in the Mississippi and larger tributaries. Hooking them is the trouble - generally difficult to get a good hookset on.
MNFishhunter
These are shortnose then???? All on a fly, for what it's worth.
Schollmeier
yup Shortnosers. I've seen quite a few below that dam. I haven't caught one there yet though - I've had my minnows shredded there though. I should really make an effort to sight fish them there one of these days. I don't get down there often anymore.
MNFishhunter
One more fish to id? I caught this last November in Iowa on a severely weighted black bugger. Hoping for a new species for the sake of a new species. I'm guessing a white sucker though.

Stick500
I just caught my first gar a couple days ago on a little spinner- I saw him cruising around just below the surface and ran the lure right past him. Once he was hooked jumped up in the air like a marlin several times!Caught him on my trout pole (5' ultralite w/ 4 lb.).Sorry no pics- didn't have my phone. Will be going back to the spot though (Iowa) and will try again.

TonyKay
caught this beast on a wacky rigged senko while fishing docks, she ended up running under said dock and made for an interesting battle...it took me by surprise to say the least lol. 37" inches, no girth or weight on this thing as i was by myself and just wanted to get her back in the water. Stick500
nice fish TonyKay! you might want to double-check your measuring device tho - if I know my carp to pliers ratio that looks like more like a 27-incher just felt like hasslin' ya a bit
TonyKay
Look at the battery in the second pic for refrence (12inches accross). I wish i coulda got a better pic :-( those are the big rapala pliers which are 9 inches tip to handle for what its worth haha

StillwaterAaron
Looks to be a greater Redhorse. Very cool It is nice in WI since they are protected from harvest they get large. The Greaters and River Redhorse will get over 10 pounds!
Abndoc
One of the best things I've ever did was to buy our little chunk of heaven on the apple river. Yes we have a long commute, but our kids get to fish and enjoy the outdoors everyday. Seeing my oldest bear hug that big old carp yesterday was so cool!! carpmanjake
well here we go! so after picking up the girlfriend for a fergus trip, decided i would stop at a carp hole before heading out. ended up getting a nice one right away arrived at fergus around midnight, a few cats by noon. nothing much. kinda lost a little faith there. but little did i know that the bite would pick up drastically... about 12:30 i started catching quite a few redhorse fayth was catching all the drum/sheephead.... her first one ever she ended up getting a 5lber shortly after... i ended up getting her into her first shorthead\ a few good mooneyes were caught as well... ended the day catching 20+ redhorse, silvers and shorthead. several carp. numerous cats. and losing 2 bigmouth buffale... day two was substantially slower, with rain in the morning and partly cloudy skies. not much for redhorse... butabout 1 i hooked into a snag while drift fishing a crawler. tried pulling it out... but the "snag" started moving.... and swimming around. after an interesting fight on an ul rod and 2lb test i landed a brute 24" redhorse.... the lips and dorsal fin are making me think golden redhorse. concave fin, lips are definately not shorthead
