My brothers and I ran dirt track cars for years, we all cheated. If you wern't cheatin, you wern't fast. everyone cheated. Some just did it beter than others. Here's a few well known well NASCAR cheats. In October 1983 in Charlotte, Petty scored his 198th career victory. Afterward, the engine was found to measure 382 cubic inches, well over the maximum of 358. The left-side and right-side tires were also on the wrong sides of the car. Petty was allowed to keep the win but was docked 104 points and fined $35,000. There also were questions the following July 4 at Daytona Beach, Fla., when Petty scored his 200th win. Ronald Reagan became the first sitting president to watch a NASCAR race in person, and some wondered whether Petty was allowed to keep his victory that day as well because it was such a momentous day for NASCAR.

Smokey Yunick might have been NASCAR's most fabled “innovator.” In 1966, he created a Chevy Chevelle that was a perfect seventh-eighths scale of the real thing – a car that led NASCAR to rewrite its rule book and inspection procedures. But it was five years earlier, shortly after NASCAR adopted the foam fuel cell, that Yunick created his biggest stir. NASCAR was monitoring the mileage of each car. When Yunick's driver kept getting 10 more laps than the nearest car in practice, he was summoned for an inspection. Although the officials found nothing, they removed the fuel cell from Yunick's car for further inspection. Incensed, Yunick got in the car and drove it away. He was running gas through the roll cage.

Junior Johnson rivaled Yunick as an “innovator.” In 1966, he created a Ford Galaxie called the “Yellow Banana,” perhaps the most famous cheater car in NASCAR history. Johnson whacked four inches off the top, angled the windshield and raised the car's trunk to help with rear down force. The changes curved the body like a banana. Strangely, it passed inspection for its first – and only – race.

Before the 1976 Daytona 500, A.J. Foyt, Darrell Waltrip and Dave Marcis qualified 3 mph faster than the rest of the field. Foyt was discovered to be injecting nitrous oxide into his engine.

Bobby Allison won the 1982 Daytona 500 minus his rear bumper, which flew off the car after minor contact a few laps into the race. However, tests showed the Buicks ran faster and handled better without the weight and aerodynamic drag of the big rear bumper. It was alleged that Nelson designed the bumper to fall off at the first hint of contact.

NASCAR once weighed the cars including such items as the driver's helmet, water bottle and radio. Darrell Waltrip's crew replaced those accessories with ones made of lead for the weigh-in, then subbed them with the real helmet, bottle and radio before the start – saving Waltrip 150 pounds. Also, Waltrip's crew would fill a frame rail with lead bird shot, which would roll out of the car during the race.

In 1965, Buddy Baker bought a car from Cotton Owens nicknamed the “Old Goat.” The car had been one of the favorites of the legendary David Pearson. When Baker started taking the car apart, he discovered an auxiliary fuel tank hidden inside the rear wheel well.

Hey minnbowhunter thanks for taking the time to put up such a great post! Very informative and fun to know. Yea we know they all cheat and its part of the cat and mouse game, but my biggest question is how are they doing it today?? with all the techno stuff at hand today you know someone as smart as Chad is taking full advantage of it. helll even when he was suspended for cheating it was almost like he was still there with the instant messaging and cell phone and such from in front of the T.V as the race went on.

thanks Cowboy, we would read the rules and it was'nt forbidden we would do it. At tech inspection we would be told it was'nt right. We could run that week but next week it had to be changed. So, we told a bunch of other racers that we were told what ever we were doing was ok. Next week they all had the same setup. The tech inspectors had to let us run or send us all home. And the game starts over....and over. pretty soon all the cars are illegal but pretty much equal.

The good drivers are the ones who can explain to their crew chief what the car is or is not doing. The not so good drivers are the ones who just say the car is a piece of junk. There are some drivers who have the talent and driving skill but fade away late in the race and than blame the car setup. JJ and team have this communication down pat. From the outside looking in I would say only a few teams work hard enough on this communication. Take their radios away and who do you think would rise to the top??

I to have to agree with yaggie on this one, I listen to JJ on the scanner almost weekly, he gives the most detailed feedback to Chad I think a driver can. Chad in turn has every base covered(don't know if the man sleeps) and turns that into an advantage for the 48 team. other drivers who shall remain nameless just say the car is junk and leave it up to crew chief to some how formulate a plan off of that. The cars they drive today are more equal than anytime in history and the margin for error is so small that the smallest bit of info can give you the biggest advantage.

i dont hate the 48

but kinda takes the fun out of it when one team is so

dominant

but i'm sure jj and chad are loving it

the only thing is the racin gods have smiled on them

hardly ever any bad luck so if he would have a streak of

bad luck thats the only way i think they will get beat

No, they do not have much for bad luck but luck has little to do with it in my eyes.

Every team does need some luck but I do not believe that it the biggest piece to the puzzle.

They go to the track very well prepaired. They have covered every angle and double and triple checked all of their equipment.

I am sure they run the best gear. have top of the line when it comes to shop personal, equipment and ownership.

One can go to any type race track and the ones that dominate are they same type race teams as JJ and Chad.

No matter what type racing venue one is racing in or attending, the ones that dominate are disliked by many other drivers and fans as they win all the time.

I sometimes wonder if they really hate the winners or are they just that jealous of them as they cannot beat them?

Another thing I wonder is, when people say they are cheaters, is that because they are not good enough to beat them and it could make them look bad so its simple to say, they are cheaters?

I use to hate to watch some drivers win all the time but now I sit back and appreciate what they have accomplished.

If they are cheating they know something that the Nascar folks don't know which I would say is pretty shrewd. Like Harv said some folks are disliked just because they win all of the time. You have to look back at one race last year where they changed a whole flipping carb and raced back into the top 10! That is teamwork and a championship caliber effort by the chief, driver and the crew! I am not a huge JJ fan but I have to admire the team for what it has accomplished. A feat, I might add that Dale Sr. never was able to do. My parents used to race snowmobiles and when the factory teams came in it pretty much pushed the little guys out of racing because of the huge R&D budgets and the availability of parts ect. These guys have the best and are using it well.
