Lazer not cutting well

Woody61

Question

My question is this, yesterday I punched theough the ice and touched bottom(lightly) it was muck and dead weeds, moved out further from shore and punched another hole but pulled up more dead weeds. On the next hole halfway through the ice it just started spinning and required as much downward pressure as I need when using a chipper blade. HAd to use extra force the rest of the day.

The blades feel sharp(unit has drilled only about 150 holes)Nothing seems bent. Do lazer blades dull that easily? Hate to drop 40 or so $$ on a new set allready. Do I just cut my losses and put my chipper lower unit back on?

Welcome to the lazer world I too am a new( used ) lazer owner. first time out this year 4 of us thought my blades were sharp. Thought just like you maybe bent? out of whack? Well I went out to strikemaster on the following monday and told them the problem and the guy said " they are dull".

$22.00 for regound pair, ran out to Big Lake and fired it up and cut like a dream. I would say yours are dull too!

It doesnt take much told fold the edge of those super sharp blade over they sitll feel sharp but the cutting edge is acctually bad. and one little nick in the blade will screw with everything.

I also so found out the hard way the blade protector cap fell of in the back of the truck and the blades hit something and it was over for easy cutting so I had to purchase the highbuck ones from a bait store in the middle of nowhereville so I could still go fishing

Drilling in shallow water like that the ice will pick up dirt and grit and become like sandpaper and dull the blades very quickly.

Also if the lake is near a dirtroad the top layer of ice can kill a brand new set of blades in minutes from the dust that can settle.

It might be worth the 8$ to pick up a lazer blade sharpener and touch them up. If you follow the directions it works petty good. I have managed to get 3 years out of the blades i got now. I generally drill at least 30 holes each time I go and that's at 3 times a week so that's pretty good life. I touch mine up once a month most of the time.

Try touching up the center point with a file, it may have been blunted. That will cause you to require much more force to feed the Lazer main cutting blades.

If it is still slow and will not cut, the blades may be in need of replacement, and get the old blades sharpened or swapped out at StrikeMaster.

I would apply the $8 for the Lazer sharpener to a new set of blades, I feel that is far better money spent. The Lazer sharpened is not 100% effective by any means, preaty tricky to use, the spoil the edge on more blades than they sharpen in my experience.

Those sharpeners work "OK" on a blade with a radius but not so well when you have the serrated edge. When you have a radius you have to follow it.

The blade can be razor sharp for 99.9% of the blade and not cut because the .01% defect is holding it back. Coarse you won't get the blade hair splitting sharp with that sharpener but it is better to have the blade at 75% of its sharpness at the entire 100% of the blade.

I dunno man, I love mine. I think sometimes people may be expecting more from a product due to the hype it recieves. Before I got mine I had already read about being careful about where you drill and about ice build up and the little tricks people have used to help eliminate/reduce these problems.

Or maybe I'm just lucky, but if thats the case then it's the "ONLY" luck I have laugh

I love mine to, I would never go back to my chipperblade. If your blades are installed right, you clear your holes and the blade after each hole to keep ice from building up. Also never set the blade down in the snow after drilling holes put the cover back on it. You will have one fast auger, mine is on a old mag111 head and I out drill my old chipper blade 5-1

I just took the blades off and there was sand between the blades and the flighting, looks like I'm getting a new set of blades tomorrow. Will switch to the chipper blade from now on when fishing sand pits and save the lazer for public lakes. Lesson learned.

I have went a whole season with a shaver type blade with no issues.

One has to make sure you do not bump it, drop it or hit some rocks on the bottom of the lake in shallow water.

I love the shaver blades as they cut fast but they do require one to be somewhat more careful with them.

I always carry an extra set along when I go fishing just in case.
