We signed someone

I fail to see the good news in this one. We seem to have plenty of lefthand bats, including two MVP's one of which is a batting champion and a good DH. It's not like the Twins to sign someone who doesn't know where his fielding glove is.

I'd say it's a cheap insurance policy for Morneau, Kubel or Delmon and Cuddyer by extension with Kubel as the replacement against injury or slump.

At $1.5M, it makes pretty good sense to me.

With the ransom Mauer will demand, it's time for some of you to take a reality check on free agent signings the Twins are likely to make until Nathan or Cuddy's contracts are gone.

exactly what i was thinking. and at least we won't have to use our back up catchers as late inning pinch hitters anymore either.

But why wouldnt we want to? I think I would like either one of them at the plate when we need a hit to win a game, a lot more the Thome.

the last few years, we've gotten away with it, but what happens when your catcher gets hurt and you have no one else who can catch available on the bench?

not a great situation to have your back up cathcer as your best pinch hitting option... Thome solves that little problem

Ok, but Morales isnt suppose to be out long. Dont get me wrong, I like Thome, and I think he can be a big part of our late inning game, but he doesnt fill one of our needs. I would like the deal a lot more if we can still find a good 3rd, SS, or 2nd basemen.

We already did that when we traded for Hardy he was an all star with the Brewers

Still think letting Cabrera go was a mistake. Guy could hit and his D wasn't what it used to be, but still decent. Since his range isn't what it used to be, a shift to second and the shorter throw makes a little sense. BTW, the addition of Cabrera last year is what got us into the playoffs

thome drilled 23 homers last year....and that wasn't even a full year cause he was traded to the Dodgers where he was just a pinch hitter. as far as i see it, Thome is an excellent deal for 1.5 million. managers and right handing pitchers are going to be petrified of the middle of our line up now. with mauer, mornuea, kubel, threat of thome, and cuddyer can hit right handed pitching...thats just a filthy 3-5(6) batting line up.

[PoorWordUsage] can he field with a glove and throw a pee rocket to first base. just think span, hardy, mauer, morneau, kubel, cuddyer (thome), delmon (who was on complete fire end of regular season), valencia (real good rookie) or crede, and whoever wins 2nd base. if all goes well, and the hiting coach is good, the twins are gonna be one heck of an offensive power this year
