my way is to keep a 4'x9" log and a come along in my truck. if you get stuck drill a hole pop the log in hook the come along and tow strap up!..

lets hear some other good tips for getting out of slush and snowbanks while on the ice with no other vehicles?

If your hung up a steel snow shovel will get you out.

Other then that don't get yourself stuck. Stuck is when you spin your tires and you dig yourself a hole down to the ice. When it looks like your forward progress is about to end take you foot off the gas and let the truck roll to a stop. Put it in reverse and ease back out on your tracks. Don't spin your tires! Back up enough to either turn around in a good spot or continue forward on your old tracks. You might end up only getting a few inchs of progress in forward and reverse. That is fine as long as you don't spin your tires that little progress can get bigger and bigger if your easy on the gas and brake to save what forward and reverse progress you made and don't spin your tires. Before you make things worse, get out and shovel before you dig that hole down to ice. Do that because if you were able to drive into it, you can drive out of it. Don't spin your tires.

if your in a pickel on the ice and have a lack ot traction let a few pounds of air out of the drive tires - not too much thou and be sure to stop asap and fill them back up again - you just want to let enough out to make the tires squat a little for more surface contact =-= this saved my bacon on big winnie when by 4x4 blew a hub and the wind was blowing the road shut

Surface Tension made some good points. At work we are always driving into places with unknown ground conditions. Some times the hardest looking yards end up being a truck trap waiting to gobble you up. I don’t know what it is about people that make them so intent on spinning their wheels until the axles are riding below ground level. We have spent hours and hours explaining to drivers that if they start spinning to wait and we will give them an easy tug. It never fails that by the time we get a call that someone needs a light pull the vehicle is in need of a half-track to fetch them out. Common sense is probably the best way of not getting stuck to begin with.

Surphase tension, you ever drive onto a lake w/ 2 feet of snow and find a slush pocket? By the time you're in the slush it's too late.

Brokenline, that's brilliant. Never thought of that. That idea would have saved me from a lot of shoveling a couple of times.

I dont get stuck, I get inconveniently delayed...

Used to have a winch that could mount front or rear, that along with a good grain shovel, and an ice bar. I could usually figure out a way to get out of where I was at.

Having a good shovel and some common sense goes a long way.

B.L. thats the method we used to pull are house out of the lake.Few yrs. back when houses fell threw south of the cities we had are 8x8 house floating in a hole about 20x20.We threw a hook threw the window and winched it out with come-along and 6x6 we put in a hole in good ice.

I grew up on the East Coast near the ocean. If we were going to drive on the beach we always let about half the air out of our tires so we wouldn't get stuck. Great idea.

Buy a V Plow for your truck then you don't have to worry about getting stuck.

Until you have real snow and it comes over the plow! Then your really stuck! I can go through/over more snow with a 1/2ton truck with GOOD tires on it than any 3/4ton that Ive ever seen. IMO a GOOD set of tires makes a HUGE difference! A 4X4 with a locking rear diff doesnt hurt either.

Once you are stuck though (everyone will be eventually) a shovel, come-along and something in a hole to pull on can work wonders. You dont have to be able to move much to get some momentum and moving again. Like said before not spinning your tires and momentum are the keys on ice and snow.

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
