Fishing with no gadgets

Just wondering if anybody fishes blind anymore?

Seems like everyone on the ice now-a-days has flashers, GPS, lake maps etc.

My guess is, if we took a poll of 100 people there would be

70% or more that are using some type of electronics.

Maybe most the old guys are still fishing blind but I bet the

rest of us are out to "catch our limit" and not watch

time pass...

I havent busted out the GPS yet this season mostly because I'm fishing a lake I know pretty well. I have a flasher that needs some TLC but havent used it ever. But I do cheat a little by looking over my buddies shoulder at their flashers and last time we set the fish house we used a flasher but I could have got on the same spot with a 25' tape measure. One of these years I'll step up and get all the nice stuff but I take pride in being able to do it without all the gadgets.

My dad fishes completely blind and he catches some nice fish, I how ever use gps, finders, and anything else I can get my hands on, because I want to, I don't like sitting and waiting so I hop around and it works for me. Ohh and I also don't keep many, actually haven't kept any all year yet, including open water

I have a fishing buddy that doesnt use a flasher. He still catches fish, but the guys that have flashers are outfishing him 5-1. But he still has the same level of fun. If I didn't have one i'd still fish, but if I had the option, electronics is the way to go.

I use a flasher at the moment. I don't fish ice fishing tournaments but wonder if anybody would enter a contest with no electronics allowed at all on a lake? Not sure how you'd control it at all without strip searching everyone as they get on the lake since someone would probably have to try and cheat but could be a good time.

In my perm on Mille Lacs I use ZERO electronics. I guess I do use a GPS to place it, but once there nada. I get too frustrated with a camera or flasher and see nothing down there. I prefer to be an opimistic and just keep telling myself fish are there. It keeps me jigging anyway.

simple answer is yes you can fish without all the electronics but the problem is society has become so dependent on electronics be it computers, gps, flashers, depth finders. i think todays generation would be lost without all the electronics. times have definately changed and yes even I can see the changes and I am only 33.

I fish without electronics on lakes that i know really well, like Koronis fished there for decades. On new water use old flasher and GPS to find my way back after dark. I keep thinking about a camera but i am too cheap

supercrew,

I personally use a marcum flasher in the winter and I use a lowrance X510c on my boat. I won't fish with out them. my whole point of my original post was that times and methods have changed but you can still fish the old ways if you choose to and sometime getting back to the basic is not a bad thing to do. when my dad taught me how to ice fish when i was a little kid we never had all the electornics and we still would catch some fish but to me the most important thing was not so much catching fish but to just enjoy the time I spent fishing with him. the fish were just a bonus. I lost my dad to cancer when I was 17. if he was alive today I think he would be amazed at all the advances in the technology.

I used to fish with a pole and a bucket, didn't catch much fish. Now I fish with a vex, heater, power auger, and multiple poles set up differently. I catch more fish now and have much more fun.

i might open a can or worms but....i think fishing has become too techie. with GPS flashers and lake maps ect. yes I do have a GPS and a flasher and I love it. i keep fish for a few meals. I think this is why we don't have any nice size pan fish because of the flashers in the winter and spaw fishing in my spring. but thats my opion

You are not opening a can of worms. you are right it has gotten to high tech. is that totaly bad? i would say no if we all have the self control to put some of the bigger fish back. you are right about the size of fish going down. one example from our area is the crappies on buffalo lake. last year was a major year for them and this year for the life of me I can't seem to catch one. the hot spot out from the court house only has maybe 3 to 5 houses this year and last year it was like a small town out there.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
