McGwire comes clean.....

its about time he has no chance of coming back no matter how hard he tries

He might be a player/coach you know. Not only are the Cardinals wanting him to be hitting coach, they are wanting him to be a pinch hitter as well.

I loved 1998, watching it everynight on ESPN was amazing, but if they let him back, then they should put Pete in the Hall. Only fair

The tricky thing about McGwire is he never really admitted to anything before Congress. He avoided every single question they asked about steroid use, and therefore he really is clean in that regard. He looked pretty silly back then under oath, but I guess it worked.

A lot of the other players denied the use, so for them to admit now that they were users would get them in some pretty big trouble.

Sounds like Larussa will have Mark on his staff. I wonder how much heat will the press dish out to Mark, and more importantly, for how long?

The ironic thing about all of this is when Canseco came out with his book everybody dismissed it as sour grapes and hype marketing but as it turns out he was truthful about everybody and pretty much everything he said in the book.I believe McGuire avoided all the questions only because he wasn't being offered immunity from prosecution and felt he would be headed to jail - self preservation I guess.

I believed Canseco, but you shouldn't wash your clothes in public like that. He should have kept his mouth shut, these lockerrooms are a fraternity of brotherhood, what happens in there should stay in there. Some of these guys would do anything for their teammates, but apparently Jose has no loyalty. Snitches get stitches

All i know is no matter who using steroids and breaks previous records you still have to hit the ball time and time again. I dont believe it makes your fundamentals anybetter it just lets you hit the ball 500yds. You still need the fluid wing eye contact and cordination to bash a ball over a fence. Cut the guy some slack one of the best players to play the game. same with Bonds, could be the best hitter of all time baseball but because of steroid use he will never get into the hall of fame ****

Regardless of what you think of Canseco...he was 100% correct in outing the wide-spread use of steroids in baseball. Naming names was not needed...I agree. Most dismissed his allegations as "self-serving" and a crazy attempt at selling more books...well, it turns out he wasn't so crazy after all.

No it doesn't help your hand to eye coordination but what steroids and growth hormone allows you to do combined with eating right and strength training is to rehab so much quicker than if you weren't on. You are able to produce day after day at a much higher level of ability than if you are natural. McGuire even mentioned he started taking steroids to minimize injuries and allow himself the ability to play at that high level consistently every day. It's pure speculation to say he would or wouldn't have hit so many homeruns if he was natural but I think we can agree without the benefits of drugs he probably wouldn't have the numbers he has now. I've beeen in several environments where steroids are prevalent and if they are pharmacuetical grade, you take them properly, and eat and train right they make a huge difference in performance and strength.

Ozzie, all true but you still have to catch up with the ball.

As I said earlier if you are playing every game of the season like it is the first game of the year and if you feel strong with no fatigue you are going to be able to hit more balls and like you said, if you get a hold of one it may go farther thus more home runs. Bigger muscles don't always equate to balls being hit further, sometimes they are actually a deterrent.

Before you guys throw everybody from "that era" under the bus consider a few things. When McGuire and others were taking steroids and setting records steroids were not illegal in baseball. Baseball didn't implement steroid testing until 2003 and McGuire was done playing by then. Baseball has always had cheating and has a long history with drugs especially methamphetamines. Speed has been around for 50 years, in fact it was available in every dugout in a large bowl for anyone to take. Mantle, Aaron and Mays openly talked about using these their entire careers. Should you take them out of the HOF for cheating? Because that's what we are talking about aren't we?

As long as the fame and money is what these players are after drugs are going to be a part of sports, not just baseball. Baseball still doesn't do blood tests for steroids and no one has a test for HGH, in addition no one can test for gene doping as well. The owners want the inflated numbers and the players union will continue to protect the players so get used to it, it is what it is. Do I condone the use of drugs in sports, absolutely not, I've competed in major sports without them and have seen the advantages they provide for the users but don't just come down on the era of recent users because it's been going on for a long time. And don't believe that speed doesn't provide a huge upswing in performance - it does and without all the things you have to do with steroids to allow them to work to their full extent.

In My opinion I would put Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson and some others in the Hall before Bonds, Clements, Mcguire, and others. Rose and Jackson did nothing to improve their preformances. They just bet on games and took some money on the side. They still played the game at a high level.

Who is to say that Rose didn't do the same thing everybody else was doing and was accepted as normal? With today's technology and media, things are caught now that were simply swept under the rug or never were known about before.
