Garbage on the ice...

Recommended Posts

To the FMer I talked to on Prior yesterday: You'll be happy to know I picked up the trash you left on the lake thursday. There must not have been enough room in your sled for a couple of chip bags and some crushed pop & beer cans.

I know your first name and handle but I won't out you this time. If I ever have to pick up after you again I will!

There's nothing more frustrating than being out on the ice and seeing trash scattered everywhere from some slob who thinks they don't need to respect nature and it's beauty. I fished a lake yesterday in Woodbury and came up on a spot where someone left a bunch of trash and 3 one pound propane tanks on the ice. Makes me sick... Those people have no business being on the ice. If you can't take your trash with you, don't bother leaving your house. All that garbage ends up in the lake! I'll get off my soapbox...

FMer's you say? I'd out them in a heartbeat. Theres no excuse for leaving anything on the ice. I was picking up beer cans and cig butts on Turtle yesterday. If I had known the people who forgot their trash, you would all know them too!

I might rat em out too. I once forgot an empty one pounder on the ice, didn't realize it until I got home. I quick unloaded everything and headed 20 minutes back to the lake to go grab it. Felt like a moron for forgetting it in the first place, but that's what I deserved. I don't even want to think about how much trash ends up in lakes through out a year.

This is one of my pet peeves, I was on a small local lake for first ice and there was already a pop can and bottle top littered out there.

Last year on that lake I actually saw a guy remove his perm and leave behind the 8x10 peice of carpet that was frozen in (after he left I went over to see what he left behind). I wish I woudl have got his license number.

How do you guys feel about sunflower seed shells or other food scraps?

I personally can't stand it, makes the area look like complete slobs were sitting there. My general thought is 'you brought it on the ice, you take it off the ice', but one could argue the seed shells are organic and will just decompose eventually.

Just wondering if I'm being to harsh on my buddies for making them pick em up before we leave smile.

call the CO and report it. show them you mean business.

Believe me, you can stop speeders better by having a cop pull them over and give them a warning than by giving them a ticket.

The same applies here I believe.

Tickets just tick people off to the point where they just don't get the point (nothing makes someone less open to reason than hot-headedness), close calls are more likely to teach them a lesson. It's a surprising part of human nature.

I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt and hope that next time he picks up after himself!

It does look pretty bad. If I'm enjoying sunflower seeds I typically spit em' into a bottle as I CAN'T STAND LITTERING!

There was a skid house on a SW Metro lake last year that had moved his house and left literally hundreds of cigarette butt's on the ice along with one of his skids that was frozen in. I'll be the first to call the authorities on anyone trashing up the lake. I've got no time for lazy slobs.

While were at it. Is it best to call the CO or the local police for littering?

Its a bummer that people (even the ones on here) would do that.

Thank you for taking the time to pick up after those people. If we all do that a little bit each time we go it does make a difference.

As far as the seeds/shells go its annoying but it is biodegradable. Still not a excuse to be a slob though. I don't leave that stuff behind when I go. It makes the lake look bad.

Im glad there are other people willing to pick up a little bit. Its not hard to take a trash bag with and grab stuff you see as you go.

Those people will always be out there and it is best if we call them on it. They may not even think its a problem if they don't hear about it. Try to be as polite and tactful as possible while still getting the point across though. You get more flies with sugar and honey than vinegar. smile

I have recently learned that a CO is just as capable for issuing tickets or warnings, whether it be parking, speeding or littering etc. I'd probably start with the CO too, as they typically have means readily available to be out policing the lake.

If you see trash on the lake pick it up.

Some people will never get it, no use in getting frustrated over them.

Pick it up, put a smile on your face and know that you did the right thing.

Someone else might just see you pick it up and do the same.

No need to toot your own horn, no need to get frustrated, no need to leave it lay there.

Lead by example and most of all remember we are all out there to have fun.

My son and I pretty much have the same policy when we leave a spot, we pick up all of the trash we see, ours and everyone elses. Been doing it for years, we pick up spent shotgun shells in the woods as well as any trash we find. I have been told that the number of 1# propane tanks that wash up on shore in the spring on some lakes is pretty bad. Sunflower seeds bother me too, it just seems disrespectfull. Same thing with dead minnows, I know the birds will pick em up but still bothers me. After having my auger stolen last season on N Center, I write down Licence plate numbers of any "shady" looking guys. If thats "profiling", I'm ok with it.

oh good a trash on the lake post! Same thread, different year...

Maybe the guy forgot it? It fell out of his sled? Whatever happened to just talking to people about the situation? Same type of "call the co on him" people would first call the police for the neighbors radio too loud.

Relax

If some of these yahoos lived on the lakes they fished they might be more inclined to pick up after themselves. I find all kinds of leftovers on my shoreline every spring even after I've gone around late in the season and collected everything off the ice I can find. Maybe the state wants to pony up some money for me to "Adopt A Lake Surface". laugh

That's one reason why I take a 5 gal pail with some of the plastic bags you get from stores. The minute you're done with that candy bar, pop bottle, whatever, it goes in the pail..NOW. I have no problem telling people to pick up their garbage..and they seldom argue. There's just NO excuse for it. You brought it out, take it in.

The thing is that you never see anybody "forget" a full bag of seeds or a 12-pack of beverages... it's only the empty stuff. As soon as people start to take some responsiblity for themselves you won't see this topic every year.
