Spam....

Recommended Posts

So I'm eating my first spam sandwich in a couple years tonight looking at it and trying to figure out it's origins, but all I could think of was "Think hairier and smaller". Anyhow, it was great but does anyone have any recipes besides the usual eggs and sandwiches?

Check out some Hawaiian and other Polynesian recipes. Spam became a staple for them in WWII. They use it in many places you would use ham or pork.

It's pork shoulder with ham added. The two explanations for its name are: Shoulder of Pork and hAM or SPiced hAM.

I just returned from Kauai and like JollyT stated, they eat a ton of Spam--most per capita than any other US State--note from Cliff Claven smile

I love to pick up the local workers favorite when I'm in Hawaii. It's a slice of Spam on white rice wrapped in a Nori (sushi) seaweed sheet. There's somerthing about the taste and texture of this that makes it unique.

Another way it's good is to fry a slice about 1/2 inch thick on both sides, put a slab of your favorite cheese on top til it starts to melt, place it between slices of toasted Potatoe bread, mustard, mayo and Banana Peppers, with an Ice Cold Beer.

joe maybe that is part of it too, but just thinking about it is giving me the heaby jeavies. i worked with a couple guys that would eat two cans of potted meat a day. if the center was darker than the outter edges they were so excited that they got a "special" can. I would liked to have gagged everytime i saw them eating that stuff.

Grainbelter, In my 'younger, foolish' days, we would slice spam about 3/8" thick, dip it in egg and then into crushed saltine crackers, drop it into about 1/2" of HOT oil in a skillet, take it out to drain(cool) it off, put it between 2 slices of buttered white bread, and smother it in yellow mustard (sometimes with raw onions). Just the thought of all the sodium and the saturated fats gives me a headache now!! It's really just a breaded porkchop sandwich without the bone. BTW, A couple of Grainbelts accompany that sandwich nicely grin!! Phred52

Use 1 can spam, 1 pound browned ground beef, and 1 jar pizza quick sauce. Mix together in food processor or mixer. Mix into a thick paste. Spread on half a hamburger bun, place a slice of cheese on top. Cook at 400 until cheese starts to brown. Chow down.

Just made a huge batch 3 days ago.
