Question on later start date?

I just read the pole from 3A and 3B it was intresting and Im glad to see the responses. Based on this survey percentages, the people surveyed would be open to AR, but it sure looks like delaying the opener wasnt to receptive in this survey.

Why do people reject the Idea of having our gun season starting 1-2 weeks later than it currently does? Im curious to see the reasons giving without having to go through all of last years posts.

I think that people like it now, being as gun season happens right during the peak of the rut, for the most part. People know that the bucks are stupid and will be roaming around looking for hot does, or following the does. You move the season later, after the rut, and people have to start putting in more work to find that buck. I believe that your "average" hunter doesn't really put all the scouting time and preseason effort in to actually pattern deer, or have the knowledge to know what the bucks will be doing after the rut. Please note that I am not calling anyone dumb or trying to be condesending at all. Look at the folks who live in the cities and hunt way up north....they probably don't have the time to be running up to their hunting area as often to do the scouting and stuff needed to really know where the deer are at. They have stands that have been productive in the past, and know they should be able to fill their tag. Now if you move the season later, are those stands going to be as productive? Think that people are just comfortable with how things are now and don't like change?

I can go either way, as I bow hunt and basically hunt from Sept to Dec anyhow.......

I'm all for MN staying where its at. If I had to make a choice between WI and MN, MN would lose hands down. A bad year in WI is better than a good year in MN. As it is, I know if I dont score in MN I will at least bag 1 or 2 Does in WI.

I'm all for protecting more young bucks, but personally, moving the season back could create issues for me. After a ton of work the past few falls I found a great area, devoid of hunters, but only accessible by canoe. A later season would mean a greater chance of ice, which would make it next to impossible to get to my area. Other than that, I have no objection to moving the season back. I'm guessing most people like the earlier season because there are all the young, dumb bucks running around for them to shoot, and the weather is going to be milder. I'd personally rather see an end to party hunting and/or APR before a change in the season.

I like it how it is now. You start moving gun season back and then you're affecting muzzleloader, no thank you. I hunt all three seasons and I enjoy being out in the stand during gun season just to watch all the deer running around the woods knowing that big boy could show up at any second.

I don't think it would be what Iowa is. We allow everyone basically to hunt all 3 seasons if they choose. It would help my tamarac swamps, river bottom, and creek bottom areas, I would have lots of deer moving in during the cold leaving some land barren of deer. Some have seen or harvested a buck that has shed a side already in places in MN. Back up the muzzy season statewide and there'd be a bit more of that. If we want bigger bucks then spread the word to not harvest the already out there yearling bucks and buck fawns which were I'm sure slaughtered off in many places like mine again. It's brought up I think to try to pick a solution for the overharvesting of our 1.5 bucks. The cycle continues.

right on, just saying to rut hunt I better practice up with the bow because the rut would be at it's tail end by mid-november when rifle begins, if the starting date was moved back. I'd also shut down quite a few bow hunters I let hunt and our family lets hunt because lots of us would join the bow hunting ranks because for many the rut and pre-rut is the coolest time of the year to see whitetails. I'm losing myself here stick. Heading to Remer to hunt Yetti.

Right on Stick, I did bow hunt 2 seasons when we had a pope and young caliber deer hanging around, 1 was poached, the other gave me the slip. I'd love to bow hunt the last week of October into about November 10th. I like that when bucks are scrape checking and making and covering ground once they do their thing before they go near nocturnal. Like this rifle it seemed they were with does so movement was up to the does, I like that pre-doe time. I would bow hunt even if it was pushed back a week, but we are already more of us talking about bow hunting as the pressure of rifle season has gotten near in or untolerable. BigHoof, I think I'll try rattling him in lol.

I would love to see them move it back. I'd be fine if they wanted to close the season for a week in Nov from bow hunting as well.

To be honest I don't think it would affect the deer harvest all that much WHERE I Hunt but I would bet it would affect some people greatly.

I've done most of my gun/bow hunting in the same part of MN for nearly 30 years. After the opening day of gun season it's like I'm hunting completely different deer.

I agree stud, as much as I hate nocturnal deer immediately after it opens, the pressure is not going to get better so hunting way more hours etc. it sure is rewarding when you connect, took till Nov. 30th for me this year and I was thinking of tag soup with dumplings. Only deer I've seen muzzleloading this year. Unless the DNR almost goes back to zone 4 and splits up hunters in our area I think the pressure thing can only worsen. I mean get real these 4 guys were sitting on 3 acres this year next to my friends 421 acres. I could provide dozens of stories similar to that one. We are hunting a completely different deer many of us. Then there are many that seem like there goal is to just bother other hunters. A later date wouldn't do much in my area as the stands all seem to have propane tanks in or under them, it would help clear up some trespass issues as we'd likely have snow to work with.
