Portable House Modifications

If this topic has been brought up before I appologize (wasn't able to find an old thread). I have a flip over Eskimo and have added the Reflectix and will be adding LED lights. Looking for suggestions/steps/photos of other modifications that others have made. Looking to add something to the sled to store my rods. Looking for a new weekend project because my mind is on ice fishing.

Paul: I know this has been posted before too, but what did you use to attach the reflectix with? My Shappel (I know, I know, but I got the DX 4000 new MISMARKED for 150 clams)is more slippery on the inside than 'ol Richard Nixon was. Thought I might give the reflectix a try..I hate the water vapor runnin' down the walls.

Here are photos of the inside and how I attached them. Took advice from another person.

* I slid the Reflectix over the crossbars and marked where the existing velcro straps were and made cuts and reinforced them with duct tape.

* A couple of my poles only had one velcro strap that met up with the Reflectix sheet so I made cuts and put new velcro straps on them.

* Each pole has 3 straps attached.

* I bought the 48" wide sheet and started it in front right by the top door zipper and ran it all the way down the back to the sled.

* Nothing on the sides only the top. It folds down into the sled just like it did before I installed the Reflectix.

Hope this helps.

Looking to add something to the sled to store my rods. Looking for a new weekend project because my mind is on ice fishing.

I don't have photos and it's a simple solution, but I use as many as 3 or 4 rod bags.

When my otter is folded up for travel I put the rod bags on top of my flashers and cameras.

I zip-tied some S-hooks to the rear crossbar, and hang my rod bags from the S-hooks when I'm set up and fishing.

I think it's a really good setup for protecting and transporting the rods, and handy and space-saving for when fishing in the shack. And quick too, it only takes seconds to hang the rod bags, or to take them down for transport.

I'm stopping to find the fan tonight and will be stopping by to show it to WBL_Scout to make sure it is the correct one. We need to have a portable modification party in my garage soon. I have lights to do and we can install more reflectix.

The one I got was $9 i think. It was in the automotive and it has some blue LED's that arent worth anything (except look cool. lol) Used some thin speaker wire to extend it down to the sled. Now I need to figure out a way to put some switches in. Thinking of some kind of box to put the battery in and put the switches on the top.

I am making the jump back to a portable. I just picked up an Eskimo Grand Caravan. Used but decent. Very deep sled.

Looked through al the mods and I just need to figure out where to start. My house has the bench seat...I woudl like to take it out, but I think I would lose some stability of the shelter...any thoughts.

I like to have "a place for everything," I just need to make the first cut.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
