Boating and Drinking???

I agree. I know of a person who was going to be somewhat responsible and instead of driving his car home from the bar, rode his bike. Turned out it didn't matter, as he got the same DUI he would have gotten with the car. If you can get a DUI on a BIKE, why not a canoe, paddleboat, etc.?

That cannot be true, I think your friend is blowing smoke up your @$%, you can get a DUI ONLY on something that is MOTERIZED, you can get one on a riding

lawnmower,dirtbike,4wheeler,3wheeler,boat,jetski,etc. I have been to a court ordered DUI class, and know the law very well. He possibly could have gotten a public endangerment, but certainly CANNOT get a DUI on a bike. Not trying to be mean or anything but that is the law and the way it is written. If he really plead guilty to DUI for this, that was not a smart choice.

Anything that is not motorized you cannot get a DUI on, it is impossible in the state of MN. Paddleboat, rowboat, floating tube with a paddle. Actually you can legally be in a boat with a motor on it and drink, as long as the motor is up and out of the water, with out the motor running, and you have oars.

Per Minnesota boating guide 2009 page 33-34

The BWI law does not prohibit drinking alcoholic

beverages aboard boats nor having an open bottle.

The law applies to operators of motorboats that are

not anchored, beached, moored, docked or being

rowed or propelled by non-mechanical means at

the time of the offense.

I don't know why I like to do the two together, I just do. When I'm boat fishing I'm busy enough that I drink just the occasional beer. But ice fishing for me, particularly in a sleeper, just seems to go hand in hand with a couple of barley pops or a bit of schnapps (and sometimes a lot) Maybe it's my heritage. Maybe it's just relaxing. But surely there isn't anything wrong with it. Of course, as stated earlier, as long as your not disturbing others or driving.

Maybe I'm weird but why can't you ice fish and not have to drink? Another thing that amazes me is a guy or group can carry out 1-3 full cases but the emptys are to heavy to carry back off.

I hear ya' on this one. Quite a few pigs migrate towards the ice in the winter months. One thing I can't leave at home is a thermos-full of some hot bean juice. My patent "Crappie Shiver" can only be achieved by ingesting a precisely brewed pot of coffee. eek

The same could be said about 1 lb propane tanks. How about smokers who think the lake is an ashtray?

I just ask that people be safe, don't bother others and not to be pigs.

I often go fishing with out beer, but I would certainly rather get togather in an ice house and have a few beers than do it at home in front of the kids. I don't go to the bars hardly anymore so I will enjoy it while I fish. And yes I bring my bottles back with me.

Ah, nothing shouts "The American Dream" better that having your kid bring you a beer from inside the house, while you are outside in the front yard in a lawn chair grin

Maybe I'm weird but why can't you ice fish and not have to drink?

I love beer and have my fill now and then, but when it comes to fishing (ice or in the boat), I just do not find fun or thrill in getting the buzz anymore. I like to fish and I want all my concentration focused on what I am doing, so I can possible catch some fish grin

Plus I am always the captain or driver, so that has played a huge roll in my decision.

Open water or on the ice it all comes down to moderation in my book. Just like just about any other life situation.

I agree. Absolutely nothing wrong with having a few beers while fishing. Just be responsible, like anything.

I don't like beer on the open water, I'm too busy casting and especially if it's warm out, I'd much prefer something refreshing than dehydrating.

And for ice fishing, be careful out there mixing booze and cold, increased onset of hypothermia is nothing to scoff at.

I leave all that for when I'm back on shore, break out the poker chips and such.

Myself, like many others usually only drink in my sleeper fish house. I don't like drinking in my boat in the summer, too busy fishing....if I did crack a beer it would be warm before I drank most of it anyway...lol

Hahah that would sure ruin your day.

Hehe, yep, but having had a treble in my head, and putting one in my borthers arm when we were younger, I would much rather have a drunk experienced fisherman casting muskie lures than a novice anything casting anything... if we are talking a realistic chance of getting hooked. Last time I got hooked, with 32" pike attached, it had nothing to do with drinking (no beer on board and at 7 am) and we are even somewhat experienced...

I wasn't even going to respond here, hehe, but it is just my guess that those who have bad experiences with "drinking and fishing/boating" might have expereinces with what be called grossly overdrinking (either first person or third person, hehe) because most having some beers, moderately, in the boat are not going to cause problems for themselves or others. Just my opinion, though and my opinion is worth squat smile

Don't over do it and go and have fun, with or without your beverage of choice. For those who don't want alcohol on board, that is a fine choice. For those who do, that is as well.

I just had my boss out yesterday catching crappies, and yes we each had a few beers over the course of 4 hours. Tasted good smile

Think about this:

You've been out in the boat all day and have had a few when it is getting dark and time to head back in for the night.

01. Your boat does not have headlights. It's lights are for others to see you, not

help you see others.

02. Your boat is going between 30-70mph (remember it's getting dark and

you've been drinking)

03. Your boat does not have a roof.

04. Your boat does not have "Crumple Zones"

05. Your boat does not have airbags

06. Your boat does not have seat belts

07. You are not wearing a helmet

08. Your decision making capabilities are not at their fullest (you are wiped by being out all day and you've been imbibing).

09. Your reflexes aren't at their peak (Yeah, I know, you've reached level 27 of

"Quick Draw McGraw" for the Wii. We're all proud of you).

10. Water is NOT your natural environment.

11. Other people driving boats on the lake are idiots and seem to go out of their

way to be in yours.

12. Morons like to tube and water-ski after dusk.

Do what you want, I'm sure you will state it is your God-Given right to drink and boat, whatever. But I sure wouldn't get into a vehicle described above with variables described above in any condition other than sober.

That sounds pretty scary. I think I'll quit drinking, no maybe I'll quit fishing and boating all togather. I can't figure out what to do. I wish I was in my boat with a cold beer, I can always think better in my boat with a cold beer.

I went out to the boat in the garage had a beer and thought about it heres what I came up with.

1. Petzal head light

2. Slow down to 29 MPH

3. Put up Bimani top.

4. Duct tape empty beer cans to side of boat for crumple zones.

5. Don't neen bags of air there is plenty out there already.

6. Duct tape self to seat.

7. Bring helmet may help keep ears warm.

8. So far the imbibing hasn't stopped me from crossing things off the list

9. Buy small rubber hammer to check reflexes after drinking, I'm pretty sure my leg will still move. I'll just hit harder if it don't.

10. I take a shower almost every day always seemed normal to me. Oh, wear life vest.

11. If I drink a few beers those idiots won't bother me so much.

12. With the fishing gear and beer I won't have room for the tube and ski anyway.

With a few adjustments I think I'll be able to keep fishing and bring a few beers.
