MUSKY18
Was emailed the following this morning. Things are looking good if they are researching the lakes already! The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking comments on individual fisheries lake [and stream] management plans for 13 lakes in Cass and Crow Wing counties. Fisheries managers use the plans to describe the past, present, and future conditions of the lake. The plans identify goals and objectives for the fish community and identify specific management activities planned for the lake in the next 5 to 10 years. The management plans available for review at this time are for Gull, Margaret, Upper Gull, and Marion Lakes in Cass County; and Allen, Clearwater, Hubert, Mayo, Round, Sebie, Shirt, and Upper South Long Lakes and Section 6 Mine Pit Lake in Crow Wing County. These draft plans are available for review and comment, at the Brainerd Area Fisheries Office at 1601 Minnesota Drive, Brainerd, MN, 5640, 218-828-2550. The comment period will be open through March 13, 2009.

smeese
I wish they would give it up with adding more up north and start adding some down here, too much preassure on the metro and southern lakes now, time to spread the love out a bit.
MUSKY18
They will be adding new lakes in the southern part of the state as well. Just seems that this area came up first. Surprised to see them thinking about stocking Gull AGAIN, with the stink that everyone put up last go around.I am sure that Shawn aka Muskie Treats or perhaps Hooker will have some better info on all of this when they have time to get on the boards! Musky Buck
Great to hear. I'm sure Lake Alexander and Shamineau will appreciate it in a few years.
10,000 Casts
I sure agree that the southerners need some muskies! That right there would reduce alot of the pressure on the lakes up here. That should be a #1 priority. As far as Cass and Crow Wing goes Gull certainly has the best habitat and size for a muskie lake, if Hubert or Mayo has a chance of getting stocked, i'll wait on buying my house this year and get something on those lakes so I can watch my little friends grow up. What about Ossawinnamaukee of the Whitefish chain? Good lakes but the WFC is still 30 mins for the brainerd guys and 130 mins for teh St. Cloud guys. I think the next lake should be closer to brainerd. Maybe Round isn't such a bad idea.

ole matty
Could be nice if they stock one lake in upper east central area. Like finylason/sandstone area.

Musky Buck
I'd like to see a few more on the ballot in Ottertail county, right now Battle,Beers, and that might be it because Pelican and Detroit might lie in Becker county. Either way 2-4 musky waters in Ottertail County isn't many considering how many lakes are in that huge county. I'd still like to see the non-resident crowd pay up a bit more for all species in MN, $38.50 isn't cutting it for me, like a North Dakotan rubbed it into me when I was on a ND duck hunt, cost you a couple hundred bucks to duck hunt for a week here, because I couldn't make the next 7 day hunt, but I can go slaughter walleyes in MN lakes for 9 months, haha he added. dcmusky
Maybe if you came to a chap. 54 meeting on this wed. you MIGHT hear something. But I agree the southern part of the state has been neglected for too long.
smeese
My thoughts on southern lakes would include Tetonka (already in there and doing well why not add more)I do understand this is part of the Cannon river chain, but maesures can be taken to contain most of them.....other lakes would include Madison in Blue Earth County, and maybe German, Washington, or even Roberds/Mazaska in rice county Roberds may already be holding some from the floods that went over the fish divider between that and French lake but who knows until one is caught. propster
I hear ya Ole Matty, maybe Sturgeon Lake south of Moose Lake? That I think has all the trappings for a succesful stocking program.

cjac
I find Mayo interesting, as it's connected to Sibley which is not mentioned. Both Mayo and Sebie are sub 200 acre lakes....hmmmm. Small lake concessions to please the masses? I'll have to look into it more. Gull, Upper Gull, Margaret, etc are all connected, so they're more of a package deal than 13 separate lakes. I have mixed feelings on Gull, I spend a fair amount of time there and it's so busy as it is with recreational and angling traffic. My little Lund gets overwhelmed and outmatched out there on a consistent basis by the big boats.... Great structure and forage, but it's a playground from June-Sept. Same can be said for 'tonka I suppose, and many other Cass/Crow Wing lakes. All said, progress is progress!
dcmusky
The biggest problem in southern MN is getting people to accept them and realize how they can benifit game fish populations by contoling rough fish.

Maybe we're missing some of the content? I question it because a number of the lakes on that list just don't fit the goals of the Long Range Management Plan. And there are other waters in the area that would be much more suitable. The way I read the above, it just looks like they are looking for feedback on how those particular fisheries are managed for all species? Am I missing something? Thanks,Aaron
Scott M
Aaron's right. Those lakes just have management plans up for review, that has nothing to do with muskie stocking. It's a nice offer by the Brainerd office to let the public see what many don't. Those management plans give a lot of detail of what the goals of the fishery are and what the principle management efforts are and for which species. It's the public's chance to voice their opinion before the management plans are reviewed and rewritten in another 5-20 years. But don't let me rain on the parade, it's always nice to get some discussion of potential muskie lakes going though... MUSKY18
I only posted part of the email. I will double check again tomorrow when I get to work, but am pretty sure that it was pertaining to muskies. Will post again in the morning.
