My collection...

Well, I couldn't sleep this weekend, so I started cleaning the basement. It seemed that everywhere I turned, I ran into muskie lures. So, I started hanging them on the slotboard to get them out of the way. Pretty soon, I decided to hang them all up to get a picture (insurance purposes). ...and, here's my collection.

Muskielures2.jpg

I think it's 117 of them. I'm pretty sure I've got a couple dozen more in my boat, which is in storage. In total, it seems like a lot. However, I know many, many more guys with WAAAYY more lures than me. I know a couple guys with over 1000 lures! At $20+ a pop, that's a ton of cash (of course, these guys are given about half of the lures they own).

Besides owning a lot fewer DC 10's than most guys (which I'm OK with), what am I missing for "must have's"??? I've got walk the dog topwaters, prop-style topwaters, cranks, twitch baits, glide baits, dive and raise jerkbaits, bucktails, spinner baits, buzz baits, and a bunch of plastics (not pictured). I have to be honest, I don't feel like I "need" anything else right now. Am I wrong?

Truthfully, you have WAY more lures than you need - I'll make a list of those pic'd that are just taking up space and you can ship them to me grin

Interested in your opinion on the krooks and the hodag.

I'm in need of a basement roundup as well.

Good collection, not much for big plastics eh?

"and a bunch of plastics (not pictured)". I'm in pretty good shape in that dept, but I didn't include them in the pic.

Cooter, I like the Krooks. The buzz Krook can be worked slower than most similar buzz baits. The other two are great bulgers- big bulge and can be worked pretty slowly, as advertised. I haven't used them as much as I should- not sure why.

I'm still mixed on the Hodag. Honestly, I like the slowmoving topwaters like the Hawgwobbler and the TopH20 better. However, they don't work well in rough water at all. The Hodag does. Also, you can reel the Hodag fast and it just becomes a slightly sub-surface crankbait. It also Fig-8's well, which the other two don't. I had one day last year where the Hodag was THE lure. It was glass calm and I could see fish laying in really shallow. I pitched bucktails, jigs, jerk-baits, other topwaters in front of these fish-- nothing. I slapped on "Corky" (nickname my buddy gave my Hodag) and those fish spanked the poor guy over and over! It was soooo fun watching it all happen in shallow water, again and again. I guess that answers your question!

The Jitterbug lookin' deals you're asking about are made by a guy down South. I think his name was Treadway (I honestly can't remember though). I was told they clack like a Hawgwobbler, but they don't. They do push a lot of water and have nice action though. Think of them as a big 'ol Hawgwobbler, but with no significant sound. If you really want one, I could get you some info on how to get one- shoot me an e-mail if interested.

Not bad Matty! My kid counted mine bout a week ago. Came up with 292 hanging up in the Muskie Room in the basement. One number that I don't want my wife to ever hear or she will try and make me stop!!

Hiya -

I'm honestly afraid to count mine. It has to be 4 digits I'm sure. I do know it takes up most of the floor joists in an 11x15 room in my basement. It's a sad deal.

Funny this came up - I was talking with Jack Burns this weekend about having a muskie fishing garage sale. I have sooo many lures I'll never use. I already have a pile of cast-offs sitting in the corner, plus could do a major cull of what's still hanging in the rafters. Might have to get my act together and have one soon.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Well I am glad your obsession is worse then mine, I am pushing 40 plus baits and thought that was a lot. I have some customs coming this week from Heckler, but that will only bring me a bit closer to fifty. (had to pay for all of mine though wink ) I also have a few soming from Musky innovations, but have a few in my box I nev er throw so I will probably toss those on the for sale area soon.

That Hodag looks like it has had some use! It must catch more fish than mine!

That custom Suick is sweet.

the Hellhound needs to be thrown more!

what are the bucktails with the globe bodies called? those look interesting and I can't think of the name.

Nice collection of Rad Dogs

Last time I counted I had a bit over a Hundo, but I think in the last year in a half or so, I have only purchased a handfull of baits - 4 DC's (or likes) 2 super d's, and the new spinner bait by esox jigs/cobra.

I figure I'm not purchasing much more without actually putting some more fish in the boat on what I currently own. [PoorWordUsage] I only use a few of them on any given day anyway.

glad I have slowed down for awhile, my wallet is also glad. haha

I have somewhere between 200 and 300 lures. Last year I started cutting my bait selection way back. This year I am going to narrow it way down and I am going to buy more colors of each bait so I don't drive myself nuts changing lures every 10 mins.

2 different Bucktails, one big w/tinsel for nightfishing and fall and one small w/hair for everything else. (5 colors)

One 1 oz Spinnerbait (3 colors)

One 3 oz spinnerbait (3 colors)

One glide bait (5 colors)

One dive and rise Jerkbait (5 colors)

One single prop topwater (one color) but I need to have 3 on hand

One Creeper (1 color)

One WTD (1 color)

Reg Bull Dawgs (5 colors)

My collection has gotten to a point of when I go to a lake, I have to take baits out of my boxes and add new ones depending on the lake so I am going to make it easier on myself and try and get it down to one box that I don't have to mess with.

i own a few lures blush .... hey Scoot, i bet i could go a whole year with five of those...but... i'd have to add some rapalas like super shad raps and shallow running x-raps. and some smaller shallow thunders by storm, more spinnerbaits, like about 10 or 15 in different colors and styles, a whole bunch more jumbo and super jumbo daredevelle's and red eye's, pollish deep divers, couple different sized sandcats, and at least a few Heckler super secrets. laugh then i'd almost be good... but... if i added a couple 13'' grandmas, a couple 13'' believers solid and jointed, at least two 12'' slammers, 4 10'' giant thundersticks jointed and solid, and 1 more Heckler super secret, then i think i could rest easy.... smile ... but... a Wishmaster would be cool. wink

That's ok, Rob- we all knew you were really sick in the head! grin

Maybe you should take a picture of them so I can give it to a co-worker of mine. She's a clinician who treats compulsive shopping, and she had a real hoot when I showed her the picture of my lures. She'd really have a field day with you your lures...

I make a concerted effort to never have all the baits in the same spot in case the Mrs. does decide to look at them.

I knew it was bad when the guys at Thorne Bros. knew my 5 year old kids name, and he knew theirs back.

I've never counted, honestly don't want to.
