dtro, you're taking all the wind out of my sails!!! smile

You have to admit, though, what I wrote is pretty close to the mark to if you take all 8 pages worth of responses into account, and not the couple of exceptions. BTW, you could lump in the exact same sentiment with the whole Vexilar/ Marcum/ Lowrance/ Hummingbird discussion and the obvious Ford/ Chevy/ Dodge/ Toyota/ Nissan talk.

What about a Lamborghini, will that be faster than my Chevy pickup?? My God, this thread should be trashed..
Yes, a Lamborghinin will go faster than your chevy! Anything to add about the ice augers? Thanks to all with your ideas and thoughts. After reading many of the responses I see many differences between the two augers. This will better help with my purchase.

The nils need to get some dealers across the state before I would buy one. Just because they are made to last for years doesn't mean they wont have any problems. Maybe if I ever saw one on the lake someone could change my mind, but it seems like all the guys with the nils must be to busy talking about drilling hundreds and thousands of holes on the computer to come out and show us up on the lake. grin

Jeff,

Any Tanaka dealer or repair center will take care of your needs for engine repairs. I had an issue with mine last fall and had the issue resolved through one of the several dealers within a 30 minute trip from my home. So I'm sure you have local options nearby and probably didn't even realize it.

I was on the Stikemaster till I die band wagon to, untill my brother got his Nils. Now I have one and feel the money spent was well worth it. I have 5 places within 35 miles of me that can service it if I need. Nothing wrong with either the Lazer Mags or Mag 2000's I used to own, I just felt Nils was the better product. But I am Bowtie till I die, nothing can or will change that grin

There are many reasons other than speed to select a Nils.

No plastic handles to break

Handles have a nice compact design to fit into the corner of a permanent.

Standard 48” shaft length (extension rarely if ever needed)

No plastic flighting to break

Easily converts to hand auger

Engine life rated to last twice as long as the competition

Light weight

Then at the end I spose you could mention that it’s super fast.

In response to this, I love the handles for one and have heard just a few stories of people abusing their augers therefore breaking the handles

Dont like the nils handles so high up.

rarely need and auger shaft more than 42" long which is standard on strikemaster

The strikelite is the only one with a plastic flighting

Why would you need a hand auger if the nils is so reliable?

No proof that shows engine life is twice as long on Nils. If you can find me proof. Show me!

Lazer weighs a mere 4lbs more than the nils (ill take that for all the other advantages

Lazer is just as fast as nils when tuned correctly.

I think someone mentions something about drilling 1 handed. I like the handles on the Nils, all they are there for is to hang on, theres no effort needed to drill with one. I have owned a Lazer and it was a great auger but not in the same class as a Nils. When you need an extension on any other brand you wont on a Nils, and as for weight still only 22 pounds with all the steel AND 48" bit or a 42" bit for you Crappieman. Strike Lites 20 pounds with all that plastic.

As for long lasting look at the performance specs on manufacture rated run hours. A Nils runs like a fine tuned sports car, smooth and quiet. 90% of fishermen don't keep their augers tuned up or have the know how to keep them tuned. A Tecumseh can be a finicky thing to get set just perfect, so far my Nils has never bogged or died after starting. No other auger I have owned can boast that.

Ok them guys at Tanaka can say what they want about how long it will run but I havent seen a Nils that is older than some of the older Strikemasters. Tuning the SM is quite simple.. Turn the governor screw out 2 turns and you auger will run much faster And correction to my old post the SM Lazer is actually only 2 lbs heavier than the nils.

Dont like the nils handles so high up.Personal Preference I guess

The strikelite is the only one with a plastic flighting nothing to add here

Why would you need a hand auger if the nils is so reliable?it's designed for early ice when there is 3-8" and the gas power is not needed, or if fishing in the BWCA

No proof that shows engine life is twice as long on Nils. If you can find me proof. Show me!Actually there is proof, look at the number of hours each engine is rated for

Lazer weighs a mere 4lbs more than the nils (ill take that for all the other advantageswell if 20% lighter is "mere" then I guess you are right. What are all the advantages you speak of

Lazer is just as fast as nils when tuned correctly. That's debatable I guess

Anything else Nils boys?

Now I have a question for you? Have you ever used a Nils??

Ok dtro. I know for a fact that most high school kids have not even touched a Nils (including me) so thats why we debate this so much. Every one cuts down all the SM and Jiffys and well to be honest we work out butts off to buy what we have. I think that your right, we should use them before we compare them, but that wont happen because what every individual owns will think that their BRAND is better than what anyone else has. Its the nature of the human being

I guess I should have corrected myself in this post too.. Since one of the other boys said the Nils was 22lbs then it is only 2lbs lighter than the Lazer. The hours on the label don't mean anything to me since there is no real proof. The Lazer is the only one that has proven itself over the years. Also I don't fish Red LOTW or the BWCA. I guess if i did I woulds have to buy the $7 extension from Strikemaster. Finally when there is 3-8" of ice i will bring the power auger anyway because I can. If that doesn't float your boat then you have the OPTION to buy a hand auger and power auger from Strikemaster which, combined, would still be cheaper than buying the Nils... With Strikemaster you have options i guess is what it comes down to.

And yes I have used a Nils by the way.

Well then I would suggest not taking it so personal. I would be happy with any power auger sold today. In fact I'm really impressed with the Jiffy 2hp STX. This post was started with a question asking what is so great about Nils. That is what the post should be about. I listed what i think the advantages are over the competition.
