Ice Armour vs. Arctic Armour

Recommended Posts

When Dave says fast delivery he means it. I have heard stories of guys ordering at 4 pm and having the package arrive at the door the next day at 9 am. That is fast!

I have Arctic Armor and love it. I fished in a panfish tournament a couple weeks ago outside for 6 hours. The only thing that got cold was my hands because my waterproof gloves, weren't so waterproof. They were Ice Armour gloves and had to be replaced within 1/2 a season of use. From my toes to my wrists I was nice and toasty though. It was about 2 degrees with a good 10 mph wind on the lake that day.

I love my Arctic Armor. I use it for spring and fall fishing, ice fishing, snowmobiling and every day running around in the winter. One of the best purchases I have made in years. The topping on the cake is it could very well save my life some day.

I sold all my old Gortex rain gear Im so confident in my Arctic Armor.

I love mine, I wear it anytime I will be outside for any period of time. It is very comfortable, it isnt bulky or heavy, like the Ice Armour suits. I just purchased the wife a set of Artic Armour , since she likes to come out fishing and hunting with me. It is great in the fall for fishing in the boat it keeps you dry in the rain, and like others have mentioned, in case you need it, it will keep you afloat incase you fall out of the boat, or break through the ice. You just cant put a price on your life, and if something did happen and you drowned, it could have been prevented for an additional few dollars! Its almost a no brainer when comparing them!

I have Artic Armor, my buddy has Ice Armor. We fish together constantly so here are some side-by-sides. This weekend on Reno I was wearing my Artic armor, a pair of polar-tec pants and a cotton thermal shirt. He was wearing a pair of jeans a shirt and an insulated flannel. We where both comfortable very similar. We did a 25-30 minute 4-wheeler trip across the lake to a hole we wanted to fish and when we came off the ice at sundown it was darn cold out. We talked about how nice a proper set of gear was because we both stayed very warm. I was feeling a chill on my upper body coming off the lake. it wasn't "COLD" it was more of "wow its cold outside-i am glad I am dressed correctly for it". So, my point...either suit will perform similar for you. I also have the red suit of artic armor not the suit that has the extra layer of insultex. In theory that suit sould be even warmmer. I stay warm constantly and I can "feel" the cold in the form a a very minor chill when zooming across the lake at sundown in 3* temps. When I am kneeling on the ice jigging a hole in the same temps I have no feeling of the chill and I am comfortable and warm. I have overheated due to lack of breathing like gadgetman has stated so he has a valid point. I keep all of my stuff unzipped Bib front, coat front, bib legs. I zip up as I get cold. I think this helps prevent the overheating issue. Also, I don't have the extra layer/warmer model. I decided against it based on some of the overheating issue. My theory was if I wear polyester base layer, then a polartec layer I have the ability to shed the polartec if I am overdressed. The extra warm Artic has no ability to remove a layer. Yesterday for example, if I would have been wearing polyester long underwear and my polartec shirt I wouldn't of felt the slight chill. A cotton thermal doesn't insulate much at all. My buddy felt about the same coming off the lake and he had the extra insulation of an insulated flannel.

On this same lines I like to fish inside a portable house wearing my bibs, and the polyester underwear/polartec combo. I take my coat off and adjust the heat to make me comfortable in that fashion. It's just more enjoyable to have my coat off. Another reason the lower insulation model Arctic Armor is the right choice for me.

I have never asked my buddy if he has any issues with overheating. I have noticed when my coat is off or open his often is too.

Now, here is another important issue. Lake Reno was strange yesterday. It had a bunch of water on the ice. When we had our house setup and banked in and cleared all the snow off the ice inside we had 1/4-1/2" of standing water on the ice. We both where kneeling in the standing water at one point or another through out the day. At one point he got his boot full of water. By kneeling in the water, the water was able to seep between his bibs and his boot and into his pants. I asked him if he had a set of built in gators like the artic armor does. His did not. I am completely confident that the difference between his wet foot and my dry foot is the built in gators of the artic armor. I didn't value that gator as much until after yesterday. Now I find it an awesome feature.

Priced the same I would go with the artic armor. Priced considerably differently I would be confident in taking the deal and getting a better value out of either set.

Take all the above and now factor in the artic armor floating ability.

I will agree that Arctic Armor does not breath the best. It will surely make you warm and you will over heat and sweat if you dont dress properly for the amount of activity your doing. I make sure not to wear cotton under mine. If I do I have a wicking layer on under it.

Unless its very cold out I dont wear my jacket when walking my house out. I will at times only zip the bibs part way and button the rest. I manage to not get damp.

This is a very small worry to me and knowing Im waterproof and will float if I should fall in the water outweighs any breathability issues I may have.

My 3 complaints about Arctic Armor:

1. It doesn't breathe. A person can feel a build up of condensation/moisture on the inside of the jacket or bibs. I haven't been cold because of this, but I do think it is an issue.

2. Snow dust and slush sticks to the camo. Likely not an issue with the other colors.

3. Lack of colors. I know of a few people that would buy a set if there were better colors available, or even just an all black suit. Black is great for ice fishing outside. Seems like a no brainer to me.

These 3 things aside, I really like mine. The fact that it is buoyant is really the #1 advantage AA has over the other stuff.

Arctic Armor does breathe moisture vapor out. It is waterproof when water is in it's liquid form. It's similar to goretex that way. It makes a great rain suit in fall and spring as well.

However it does have a higher insulation value compared to what you are used to so you may sweat more if you are active with it on. The heat does not escape as easily so you sweat more. It's your bodies attempt to cool down.

You don't need the layers of clothing like you do with the other gear available.

I love my Ice Armor. I can't say I like it more or less than Arctic Armor because I haven't owned both. I really don't think of my suit as being bulky at all but then again I haven't compared directly. The Ice Armor is extremely warm, wind resistant and waterproof. So far this ice season it has been a dream come true and I highly recomend it. As far as the concept of Arctic armor being a possible floatation device... I love the idea. That would be a big selling factor in my opinion.

Trial run last week on LOTW- day one, -58 wind chill, 13 mile ride on snowmobile, never got a touch of cold- wore two pair long underwear under the bibs- no pants, two base layers and flannel shirt on the top- never cold.

I have the Arctic Armor and my Brother uses the Ice Armor..I made the mistake of wearing to many layers! I had polyprops upper and lower..A pair of polyester adidas pants...A wool sweater...and a fleece! Then the AA.. My god was I roasting! It was only 15 degrees but very windy! My brother had the Ice armor and he was layered up about the same as me and he was not as warm as I was...But I can verify the AA does collect moisture, When I got home the shoulders were damp inside the coat and the legs of the bibs were also damp but this was after an 8 hour fishing day..I believe this was my fault for over dressing I hope? I am not going to wear as many layers next time and I'll see how it works out.. So far I am very pleased with the purchase!! Even though it was damp I was still very warm.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
