strikemaster froze-up blades

I always set the end of my auger on a sled to keep it out of the ice/snow/slush. I wipe off the blades with a nylon brush to keep them from freezing up in between holes.

I am careful to always use the blade cover to remove the ice from the bottom of the blades. That way you don't have to worry about dulling them and you probably won't cut yourself. Pam works, too...

I don't know how to stop it yet.

I've had the auger ice up or pack full of ice WHILE cutting the hole. Halfway through the ice... no more cutting... auger head is packed with ice chips. Pull her out, clean it out, back to cutting.

On LOW a week or so ago, -11 air temp, had this happen 6 times in 3-1/2 holes. Put the Strike-Lite back in the truck and pulled out the Lazer Mag to finish the work.

I'm really not that impressed with the design of that auger. Powerhead is fine, the auger is a different story.

Don't be discouraged from getting a Strike Lite, it's a great auger and most of the time on most ice conditions it will do an awesome job for you. This year on LOW however due to the way the lake froze up there is alot of jagged, layered ice which may or may not exagerate the problem with the blade. Under normal situations with good clear solid ice I don't think there's too many problems. If it were me I would buy the Strike Lite and put a Lazer mag or the single 8 1/4 chipper blade on it and you'll have one of the best augers out there! Good Luck

Good advice Namas.

I bought a used strike lite power head and bought a 9 inch lazer mag blade on it and it works great!!!! I am so happy with it. Starts right away and cuts through all ice. IMO it is the best auger out there.

Notice in the In Fisherman Ice mag this year that in a Shappell ad Bro Brosdahl has a lazer auger on his StrikeLite auger head??

Last weekend after drilling 10-15 holes I set my strikemaster ultra mag down and while cleaning out my last hole I heard a loud POP. Looked over for source of sound and saw one of my blades literally busted in four pieces. That was very strange as the auger was not IN snow at time. It was sitting on top of hard clear ice. Anyway, I was concerned and wondered if it would cut a hole with one blade... before I left I popped a hole only to find that it actually worked better. Prior to that it would occationally sieze up at end of hole and bind a bit. after the blade blew up the thing cuts right through... Strange I know. I should get new blades but I'm having a hard time doing it since it is now cutting better than before. Anyone have any experiences like this one...???

Maybe the blade that broke had a bad pitch on it, thus causing it to bind up. Don't know why it was shatter on you, but two blades with correct pitch and sharpness should cut better than the single blade.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
