Greenback Monster...15.3 pounds!

Recommended Posts

Today was one of those special days when a truly massive and amazing walleye was captured.

Three trophies for todays efforts, but this one really did steal the show!

For the past few weeks, REELBAIT Flasher Jigs have been lighting up the Red. Once again, all of todays trophies fell victim to a flaher jig!

The one measure out at just a hair over 30 inch's and was a couple ozs. shy of eleven pounds. Nice fish no matter how you cut it!

This next SUMU walleye was todays show stopper! It measured in at just a tad over 32 inch's and tipped the scales at an even 15.3 pounds! A truly massive walleye by all standards!!!

Is this from the Red River that I have been hearing and reading about about lately from this site that has me itching to make a trip up there? Could one of you guys give me your e-mail address about a trip there. Mine is in my signature.

I was in Winnipeg about five years ago for spring break, we decided to try fishing on the red river north of winnipeg. It was a very unique experience as we met alot of very nice canadians who ended up showing us how to fish the river, which had four feet of ice and a current that made fishing with any jig less then 3/4 ounce impossible, after moving a couple of times a gentlemen i was fishing with caught a 13 pounder, still to this day the biggest walleye i have ever seen. I am not sure if this is the norm for walleyes on this river in the states, but up there I know they catch some monster walleyes!!

Just get in touch with Stu. He will put you on those monsters. We have been up a couple times and each time we leave we want to go back even more. catsonthered.net Like I said Stu will take care of you. Also check out some early episodes of the In-Fisherman Ice Fishing shows. Stu and Chip Leer can be seen fishing Lake Winnipeg and Chip lands some brutes on the Red.

Absolutly first rate place Stu has up there. See you in March!!(and god willing once or twice before that!!!)

Thanks Jethro80 and I totally agree with your comments! I have always considered myself extremely fortunate to have been born and raised in this part of the world. World Class fishing and hunting or anything to do with the great outdoors and right on my doorstep. It doesn't get any better than that!

Here is a clip I put together of the fish we caught on the New Years Day trip and Ryan's sumo beast.

New Years Day Sumo Hunt on the Red clip by Ed Carlson.

Man Ryan can let out a WHOOP...when he needs to...LOL! Don't blame him a bit, it was a beast of a Red River Greenback Walleye.

Well done Ryan, I suspect your pretty much sold on those Reel Bait Flasher jigs I talked you into now....ain't ya.

The Winnipeg Lake run Greenbacks, yes.. it is there year around coloration.

Walleye that spend a significant time in the river appear to regain the classic walleye color patterns. So you may hear us refer to them as "Lake run Greenbacks" or "River Walleye", it is based on the coloration they present.

The iridescent green glow of the Lake Winnipeg Run Greenbacks is unique, and amazingly beautiful to see in person. No fish like it on the planet, simply beautiful!

FYI: You also see this green iridescent manifest itself in some of the age groups of Channel Catfish on the lower Red. Again this is due to certain year class's spending significant time on Lake Winnipeg. This makes for some incredibly hansom channel catfish, sparkle green, shades of pink, greys and slate glue shades....gorgious creatures.

Lake Winnipeg has been good lately, especially for big fish. partner and I caught 4 MA's last time out. 1 of them was over 30". Too cold to go out the last few days. Supposed to warm up in a couple of days.

Do you guys have luck on those jigs in open water too? I'm thinking those might be good for the Rainy River run in the spring. Do you try them with a plastic tail ever?

"Yes" to open water!!! Last October over on the Winnipeg River and Traverse Bay, we absolutely hammered the walleye on these jigs!!!

As for adding plastic, yes to that as well! wink
