Re: Grantsburg- Minong-Siren-Spooner-Webster Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

From my experience, walleyes have been very hit or miss on Devils. It's been a number of years since I've fished there, but I imagine it's much the same now.

Walleyes can be pretty much anywhere, often times mixed in with the bass. So if you're getting bass (which is hard NOT to do out there), you're likely near the walleyes too if you're on the breaks. Walleyes are up in the weeds. But the best spots that I found were always right on the breaks where the weeds tapered off and things quickly drop from 14 and down into 18 to 20 feet of water. Lots of areas like that out there. But I never found one specific area that really stood out over anywhere else.

Success can be a hit or miss for numbers of fish. You should be able to catch a legal walleye or two. Suggestions for winter walleyes try the 1. West side of the lake in front of the resort 15-20 fow low light both early and evening. 2. Off the landing on the east side of the lake there are a few crappie cribs and alot of changes on the bottom of the lake submerged weeds, sand, pebbles etc. along with rapid changes of depth. 3. There is a small creek that feeds into Devils in the Northwest corner. Try fishing just outside the bay along the break. Summertime-best success has been jigging with small sucker in various depths depending on time of year. Rapalas have been great casting along weedlines. Good luck. Hope I've been helpful.

AWH-When you caught the bass were they typical 12-15 inches or did you catch any sizeable (3-5 lbs)?

muskiegawd,

I'm a numbers freak. So I've got stats for almost everything when it comes to my fishing. I started fishing Devils in 1988 and fished it quite often up until about 1997. Since then it's just been occasionally.

But in that time, I've caught 160 bass out of Devils over 12". I would guess possibly twice that many under 12". But the breakdown of those 160 bass...150 of them are from 12" to 14.5". The remaining 10 have been from 15" to 17.5". Average size of all 160 is 13.03". So yes, they are pretty much all in that size range you mentioned. A 15" bass is a big one out there. My brother did catch a 20"er out there one time. But that was by far the biggest one I've seen from Devils. Although I used to see pictures of some very nice ones, many over 5 pounds. This was mostly before I started fishing it in '88. So I don't know if the lake has just changed that much or what. But it definitely has not been known for big bass since I've been fishing it.

Dan-I was working for a company in Hopkins, MN called Storganize. Due to lack of work I became unemployed shortly after the new year. Things aren't looking so good for the company and don't know if I'll be returning. In the meantime, collect unemployment checks and FISH! FISH! FISH!
By the way I like your tables! My parents are the owners of Yah Butz in Siren and are very pleased with them too.

AWH- Things still are the same, for the most part, but larger bass are getting to be more frequent. On the north side late spring and early summer have been great for decent bass
15"-19". Another spot that produced was the shallows by the inlet. Give these a shot to get your avgerage up.

Dan- Yes it is a small world-with alot of lakes! Reguarding Yah Butz, they were going stay open this winter but due to snow conditions it looks like that they are not going to be open until next spring.

I fished Upper Clam on Friday night, Saturday till noon and Sunday until 9 AM. This weekend was very, very slow. I got a few small perch only. Missed two flags. No bluegills or crappies for me on Upper Clam. Saturday PM I fished Big Mckenzie for one baby walleye and a few small perch. Sunday afternoon I fished Wood Lake for a few small bluegills and a couple of small crappies. Also got some small perch. I saw a lot of fish that were suspended in 26 FOW but they did not want to take a bait. SLOW fishing this weekend but who knows what next weekend will be like.

nice report mpester. I fish Big & middle McKenzie quite often in the summer but have not tried the ice bite. 2 years ago middle was great but now I focus on Big. Which access is best to go out of in the winter? Does the hump out fron West Point produce in the winter? How about the breaks off the rocks by the public access?

I fished Devils a few times this summer for walleyes and stumbled across some great gills & perch along with mostly bass & a few eyes.

Thanks for your help!

Last weekend was the first day I ever fished Big Mckenzie. I trie to access the lake from the north end near that bar but the snow was too deep. I ended up fishing just out from the public ramp on the east shore. I walked out because the snow was too deep and almost no one had driven out in the week since it snowed. I fished a drop that went from 14 - 28 feet in about 25 yards. I am going to try that lake in the summer so I can find some structure for next winter. Also, I want to fish it early winter next year before we get 18" of snow so I can drive to some spots. Too hard to walk in 18" of snow.

I am taking my girlfriend up to webster/siren the weekend of the 15th n 16th and was wondering where to go for a decent day time fishing spot for action.

I know the area well but most of the spots are night spots. Smaller fish dont matter as long as I can be on some action.

Even northern fishing would be a decent thing to just watch the flags for a while.

I'm not going off of experience, but I would think that Clam would be a good option. From what I know about the panfish, I would think you could get on some bluegill action. I've only fished there once in my life, and it was open water about 10 years ago, so no ice fishing experience. But from the amount of pike we caught, I would think you would get a lot of tip up action out there as well.

You can go to devils lake and catch all the 13"-14" Bass you can shake a stick at. just stop and pick up some crappie minnow and a bobber for her. keep her busy all day long!

At any given time you could catch 50 a day of the main weedlines by the launch

Bass on Devils must be a good option, I always catch more of them than walleyes! You might also consider Johnson around 1 of the 2 holes. Fish in the weeds for panfish and put the flags on the weedlines. There are lots of pannies and snakes in this lake and there are only 2 spots with a weedline.

Has anyone run into any panfishing out on devils during the day?

I know most the main spots out there from open water fishing, just never fished it through the ice.

Or any lakes around Luck that may have panfish/northern action goin on?
