bassNspear
I have been doing alot of reading on how guys fish deep water with jigs. Just wondering what everyone else look is on this subject is. What i mean by that is how do you go about fishing jigs in deep waterThanks for the information.
Deitz Dittrich
Not sure what you are asking BNS... I fish deep water with jigs, Usually 1/2 oz, and head designs depends on if I am fishing a deep weed edge or deep rocks.. Jigs in my opinion are the most versitle lure out there.. period! Ralph Wiggum
What do you consider deep? I fish outer weed edges in 14'-15' of water with jigs quite a bit. I mostly use 1/2 and 5/8 ounce jigs. Hop, sit, hop, sit, hop, sit, etc. Don't know if you'd consider that deep water, though.
Neighbor_guy
Drag, bounce, swim. They all have their moments when fishing deep, 15-25 foot ranges.
TonkaBass
For flipping jigs I use a long rod to help pick the line up and I set the hook with a long, hard hook set. I normally fish vertically more the less, because I mostly fish these in the weeds. After I cast or pitch it out there, I pull some line out to make my lure fall straight down. The fish will let you know how to work the bait, but more times than not they hit on a nice slow drag-stop type retrieve.
bassNspear
thanks for the information. I know there is a ton of different ways to fish them. Im looking for the fact of going out to a lake that you might know a bit, and looking at some deep water(20+ feet) and fishing that with a jig. Deitz Dittrich
I just got off the phone with BNS and we chatted.. Deep water is deep water! Could be a weed edge, one you cant see, could be beyond the weed edge. The fact is and always is, these fish are not looking for that one magic lure.. They will hit an unknown number of different lures. You just need to find the one that will most effectivly cover the area you are fishing. At times, that lure is a Jig N Pig... in 15-20+ feet of water! Having the right gear, and feel of the lure is what will make it successful for you. But a jig is a great deep water lure.
bassNspear
it was a awesome talk bud. I think you hit it right on the head, just have to get out and fish, and learn how to do it. Look forward to getting out with you this summer and learning the ropes of deep water fishing.
SledNeck
Denny Brauer suggests trimming your jig's weedguard only when using lighter line in deep, open water situations.
bassNspear
thats a really good point. Thanks for the tip.
rockman
Anybody ever use, or at least buy, the Rock N Roller jigs when they came out on the market a few years ago? RNR's work well for deep water fishing, although regular football jigs are basically the same thing.
YUM
Is the Rock N Roller jig the 'rock jig' made by All-Terrain Tackle?
bassNspear
its always awesome to get more information from all you guys that have a different look on all the different ways to fish deep water. That is why i love this site so much, yall can show what you think and have learned.
Deitz Dittrich
Rock- The roller Rock jigs are about the same as any football jig.. and you bet I use them.. they are fish catching machines.
st.crioxfishin
YUM,The rock jig by All Terrain is essentially the same thing as a "rock n roller" jig or a "roller" jig. Tip it will a spider tail grub and you'll be set!
rockman
I think the company that originally made the RNR jig renamed it the All Terrain jig, later on.The RNR jigs were packaged, and sold with the spider tail grub.I may be wrong on the name change over, so somebody correct this if needed.I also use the football jigs in a couple of different sizes.Love 'em for fishing deep rocks/gravel, and deeper, hardpan shelves. YUM
ahhh, so the RNR jig is unskirted. I have both the skirted and unskirted football jigs by all terrian. This winter I bought a few new football jigs to try, they are made by Black Angel Jigs.. they are kinda unique.. 80 strand skirt, hand tied, and each has four longer strains of skirting... they seem nice but time will tell. Yea, the RNR's I bought are unskirted. The surface of the lead head on the RNR have little divits all over it.The generic football jigs I have don't have the divits. There is also a difference between the two,as to where the eye is located on the jighead. bassNspear
when you guys fish deep water, do you use open faces or bait casters? Also, do you use mono or braid.
Deitz Dittrich
BNS- great questions...Deep water patterns dont really hold strong till july.. you can find fish deep earlier, but not in schools. If Iam fishing less than 1/4 oz i will use spinning, but that is so seldome, I 90% fish baitcaster for deep water. About the only open water rods I use are dropshot, and exposed jig worm.. NEVER.. NEVER!! a jig!Mono/Braid.. its a toss up... its hat works for you.. and depends on more what you are fishing.. Though deep water in stained water where you would use a braid is only about 8 feet deep.. where deep in clear water is 20-30 feet deep.. I would say deep water fishing for me is usually with mono.. I will use braid for a roller rock jig in rocks.. because braid can handle the rocks soooooo much better.

BNS, I use baitcasting equipment for my deep jigging with these heavier type of jigs. The RNR's I have are 1/2 oz. at the minimum, and the smallest football jig I have is 1/4oz.,all the way up to 1 oz.Spinning gear is a bit too light for this type of fishing.I have always used mono, but will give the braid option a try for this type of jigging, this summer. bassNspear
thats the thing, i just need to get out and learn how to do it and work at it to become better. I have come a long ways in the past few years, no doubt about it.
bassislife
What time of day do you guys usually fish deep water? I usually hit the weedlines early/late, and then during mid moring all the way to mid-late afternoon I fish deeper water. It seems like my best deep water success comes from around 10a.m. to about 3 p.m., but early and late can be productive too.
