Cheap Internet Access

Coach1310

Question

Hey all. Looking to change internet providers. All I need is to get connected and free customer support over the telephone. No fancy high speed. No bells, no whistles.

Any info on your providers, cost etc. would be great. Thanks

Happy BD coach. I would agree with Netzero. If you get their "high" speed dial up it's not too bad. If you google free internet you wild find a few more that are around $10/month. I think People PC is one of them. I've only used netzero for traveling though so can't a user account of the others.

Careful with Net Zero. While I have no complaint with the internet service I do about the customer service.

I cancelled my service about a year ago because my cable company finally brought brodaband into my neibhorhood so I upgraded. They offered me a free month of backup dial-up service and I declined. I told them I want no part of their service after that day.

Well... about 6 months later I started seeing charges from Net Zero on my credit card. I don't usually check my credit card statement that closely for the smaller charges but they had been charging me for 2 months of service every other month. After about 45 minutes of arguing with customer service I finally got it credited back on my card.

What they did was skip charging me the following month after I cancelled service to make me think it was cancelled.

Thats my experience with them...

Thanks for the info and the B-Day wishes. Its not as cool as when you were a kid, but the alternative to getting older really sucks, so I'll take the bdays any chance I get. We currently have People PC, but in the need of customer service they charge $3.95/min to talk with someone. I am usually savvy enough to fix the problem, but in the event I can't or my wife needs some assistance I would really like the security of having a ## to call and get some free help. Anyone ever use Copper? They are the cheapest I have found so far.

Qwest or USFamily has 256K DSL for $19.99 per month. Its only about 5 times faster than dial up, but trust me its worth it! (I have the faster DSL service myself.)

If you are paying for a second phone line for dial up, it would not make sense to NOT get DSL, because you can drop the second line.

This is kind of in jest, but free internet is as easy as firing up a wireless laptop in a suburban neighborhood.

I have no less than 4 unsecured wireless connections to choose from, right now

I guess people don't care about security.

We use Localnet with their "accelerator" for 12.95. The accelerator downloads graphics low rez at first then switches them to hi rez. Actual connection speed with our dialup runs 36Kbps. No monkeying with ads or other restrictions.

Or for about $20 you can by a USB wireless network adapter to plug into your desktop. whistle.gif

Meh, I just looked at the Qwest HSOforum and I guess they are not offering the $19.99 basic dsl service anymore... \:\(

It would still be worth dropping a second phone line for dial-up in favor of DSL or Cable for anyone that might still be doing that.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
