Nils Auger

Recommended Posts

Hello all!! I need to purchase a new power auger and would like some information on these augers. I cannot decide between the Nils and the Jiffy. I know the Jiffy's have proven themselves time and time again.(at least mine has) I am leaning towards getting the Nils because I have heard alot of Great things about them but lets hear what you all have to say. Any information you have is greatly appreciated!!

Jason,

All I can say is I love my Nils and just about everyone who has played with it on fishing trips has said "WOW!".

Basicly you'd have a very light, fast cutting, easy cutting and durable auger. I've said this many, many times since getting my Nils, It's a runner and gunner's dream auger. In fact, that's how my wife decribes it, Jeff's dream auger. This winter she's even bored a few holes with it. That's something that she's never thought about trying before. But after watching me drill so many holes and saying how easy it was, Just hang on and let the auger do the work, she gave it a try.

I've used many many brands and models of augers over the years, This is the one that I'm hanging on to.

Good Luck!

Windy the one thing I can never do is bad mouth a Jiffy cause it was the best auger that I have ever owned and the weight of a 3 horse with cast iron sleeves can be a little heavy to lug around if you want to punch lots of holes. I have punched 200 to 300 holes with my Nils and there is no way I would trade because of the weight and that the motor runs and runs. If you set it down on the ice it will keep on running like that energizer rabbit. When you cut your holes the most important thing to do is to not put any downward pressure because the blade cuts so good you don't have too. The hard part is that when it is going to reach bottom and cut thru it works best if you apply a little lift so it cuts a little less ice so it can punch thru smoothly. Hope this helps and remember that it will also work as a hand auger for that early season ice.

I had been using the Nils hand auger all season and could probably cut holes faster in 20 inches of ice than half of the people I see out there with power augers. This past weekend I received my Nils power auger......I don't think I can add much more to the great abilities of this auger other than what the others have mentioned.

Enjoy your new auger when it arrives. The Outdoor Pro Store was extremely fast about the shipping. I was very impressed.

Good Morning All! I ordered my new Nils this morning and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I have heard that for break in they run 1 tank of gas through them before actually drilling any holes...Is this true? Also, what kind of oil have you been using in these augers..I don't want to start a debate on what oil is best just looking for some advise. I will give a report on how I like it after I have used it for a few weeks.

Thanks Again Everyone!!

I would go with the nills. I have not used one, but from what i have heard they are pretty nice.

Sorry, but i am not a jiffy guy and i will never own one from what i have seen. Maybe the new ones are different, but this weekend i was fishing with someone that had an older 3 HP jiffy with the chipper blade. It looked like he really was leaning on it and my ears are still ringing.

I have both and like both. That said I will always have a jiffy around just can't bear to get rid of them too good and reliable. The big difference for me ended up weight. The Jiffys are a work horse easy to fix and aways cut with the chipper blade. I have always said that if anything goes wrong with my Jiffy all I need is a leatherman and I can fix it. But the Nils is faster and much lighter. The Nils is what I have been running all winter. I have never needed an extension both the end of last season. The biggest thing for me is that I like fishing out of 10" holes and I have had a tough time getting used to the smaller hole of the Nils.

A Jiffy loud well some are. But that would be an old one then new ones aren't too bad. The biggest thing with a 3 HP in either a Jiffy or Strikemaster or Eskimo is to have them adjusted right it the carb is off slightly it will make the auger no fun to run. Yes you do need to lean on a Jiffy as well for it to really go. So there is another advantage of a Nils. A year ago you would have seen nothing out of me but Jiffy Jiffy so that fact that I am willing to give some credit to Nils is really saying something.

Dtro -

How did you decide to run it at 100:1? I just received my Nils last weekend and ran two tanks through it at 25:1. The manual indicated running it anywhere from 25:1 to 50:1. It was burning really rich and now that I ran two tanks I am going to reduce down to 50:1.

Thanks

Basically I took the advice of the Amsoil rep and others that have a Nils. Amsoil has a pillow packet that you mix with one gallon of gas.

Starts 3-4 pulls everytime and no smoke or unburnt oil.

So far so good......

I use Amsoil Sabre in the pillow packets for a gallon of gas at 100-1.

I've been told by the Amsoil reps and the owner of NilsUSA it should work fine and reduce the smoke significantly.

Another Amsoil saber user as well. I use the bottles and usually mix it between 85:1 and 95:1. At 75:1 I still had oil discharge. The auger runs great with minimal smoke and no oily discharge at those levels. The packets sure are convient though. I'll likely switch when I burn up what I have in the bottles.

Amsoil Saber here too. I broke mine in at about 70-80 to 1. After I was through with the 1st 2.5 gallon gas tank I mixed, about 1/4th of a season I guess, I started running it 100 to 1 and its great. Easy cold starts and very very little odor and no smoking or greasy exhaust.

Where does a guy buy these Amsoil pillow packets?? My Nils should be here soon and I am going to need some oil. I normally run Polaris oil in all my augers but I am willing to try the Amsoil.

Thanks in advance!!

Buying a Nilsmaster is one of the best ice fishing equipment purchases I have ever made second only to buying a flasher. I previously had a 3hp, 10" Jiffy Legend that made drilling holes a workout. My auger always is up and running on the second pull. Still cannot believe how these augers can shred through the ice. Like I have said before, Nils says it can cut through 41" of ice in 12.2 seconds, but I tend to think it would drill to the center of the earth in that amount of time!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
