Auger gas mixture

Hey I remember seeing a post regarding gas mixtures with augers but I cannot find it again.

I have a Jiffy auger that I had a shop tune up and ajust the carb this fall. It ran great but now since I put fresh gas with the recommended gas-oil mix it is running like Cr@#. The mix is 24:1

Thanks

Which Jiffy auger? Most Jiffy's and Strikemasters are 24-1, if you are using regular 2-stroke small engine oil. What do you mean by it is running like crud? Tough starting, idles poorly or not at all, hunts at high RPM, spraying oil out of the exhaust like a hose, smokes like a chimney, etc...

There have been many posts and threads (in both Ice Fishing and Equipment/Expert forums) over the last couple of years about this problem of using the factory recommended ratio with the factory recommended oil - heavy smoke, poor performance, oil coated fish house, oil coming out the exhaust, and more!

The solution - change to AMSOIL synthetic Saber Professional. You can use it as lean as 100-1, though many are choosing to use it richer in their augers with a lot at 80-1 and a few as rich as 50-1. Even at 50-1 you will run nearly smokeless, and get far better performance from your machine. Some don't even open the door while operating, but I do recommend get in some fresh air - they will put out carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide!

I switched to Amsoil Sabre Pro and i cannot belive the difference it has made in my auger performance!!! No kiddin.

I have a Strikemaster Mag 2000. I used to run the factory recommended 24:1. I did this since I got the auger about 5 years ago. It ran fine, however it smoked a ton and was not happy about starting when it's really cold out.

With the Amsoil it starts (every time) on the 2nd or 3rd pull, little to no smoke, and I can easily tell the difference is power. Power has increased a TON!!!!

I'm still scared to go 100:1 with this oil. Call me old school but my mind just can't let it go that lean. I run about 80:1 and man, I'll never go back to a different oil. Added bonus is that the price is very reasonable. Try it, you'll like it.

Amsoil is available from independents like the Oilman, Amsoil directly, or some stores. I buy a fair amount of Amsoil product from Amsoil directly so the shipping isn't a big issue but I wanted to try the Sabre Professional and didn't need to order anything from Amsoil so I started looking around. In the south metro I found Amsoil at FleetFarm and a couple of autoparts stores (O'Reily, Red Rooster, Napa).

Yes, if you place a very small order the shipping is high. As also is anyone else's minimum shipping and handling charge. If ordering more things at the same time it is not as bad (per each). But if you spend a lot of time and running around to find it, the cost of the shipping is very very low!

Also, as a Fishing Minnesota sponsor (ad in Equipment/Expert forum) I really do appreciate your business. When you order through any of my links I get credit for it. AMSOIL ships direct from the closest regional distribution center (Superior, WI for most on FM) for 1 or 2 business day delivery to most (1 FMer recently did take a week - he hit at a time that AMSOIL's computers were down for a major upgrade). I am not AMSOIL Inc, but an independent dealer. When you buy through most other stores I get no benefit.

I finally found some Saber Professional at a lawn tractor/ATV/snowmobile/chain saw dealer.

The brand new huge Fleet Farm in Rochester didn't have it, and I didn't check any auto parts places. They were my next approach if I didn't find it where I did.

Lots of places have some Amsoil stuff, but the Saber Pro is particularly hard to find. One place I called said they had it, so I drove over there only to find that they had the Interceptor oil. I had specifically asked for the Saber Pro, but I guess the guy saw "2-cycle" on the label and thought that was good enough.

I now have two 8oz bottles of Saber Pro, which should last me 2 or 3 years if I mix it 50:1 and use it in my ice auger, weed whip and chain saw.

my jiffy 3 hp was running bad the last few years. i had to keep the choke all the way on just to drill holes. I tried adjusting the high speed screw but it would still starve out. i assumed from this that my carb needed cleaning. it still always started on the first pull though. well i bought some of the new 40:1 jiffy oil and mixed that in my can. when i got to the lake the first time this winter with the new oil/gas mixture, my problem was nearly gone. a small adjustment on the high speed screw was all that was needed to get that auger running better than it has in years. when i asked a mechanic friend about this, he said he had the same problems until he switched to a better quality oil at a leaner ratio. incidently he prefers polaris injection oil mixed at 50:1. his recipe also includes a quarter can of seafoam per 2 gallons of mix. his advice was to always stay away from cheap generic oil and mix it somewhat leaner than the reccomended.
