Memorable night on the ice

Was sight fishing for trout last night on my favorite local lake. First, I missed a big trout. Twice. Then I saw a flash of something just under the ice so I brought my jig up and here it comes...right up the hole...OMG!...MUSKRAT...three times he tried. Three times I jamed my boot down into the water to stop him. Never seen that before!

A bit later I iced a nice trout, then something big took my bait. My poor 24" UL St. Croix was bent to the handle. Three or four minutes later I pulled a HUGE northern through the ice. My camera was in my truck 200 yards away, no other fishermen within 200 yards. All I could do was get a rough measurement and put him back down the hole.

She was about 36" long and so fat she filled my 8" hole! 20lbs?

I had a muskrat come up a spear hole one time and start doing laps around the shelter.

Well about the third lap my dad kicked at it and knocked over a homemade 5 gallon barrel stove. So now we have a muskrat trying to kill us, but in the meantime we are choking from the smoke.

I gotta believe anyone around us got a good laugh of seeing us girls flying out of the house in a cloud of smoke.

Sounds like a great catch on that pike! It was probably somewhere in the mid teens for weight.

I've never had a rat come into the house, but did have one of them big, greenish gray, nasty looking water beetles, with the big pinchers, and shiney bb shaped black eyes, make it's way unannounced into my house.

I bent over to pick something up and in the gloom of the portable, something walked onto my fingers! Being that me, the minnows and the few waxies I had in a box in my pocket, were the only living things that were supposed to be in that house, it was an instant case of potato eyes and elbows! I must have made 400 movements in one second!

I'd bet that the outside of my fish house looked like a blue Jiffy Pop popcorn container! Looked like the WWF was having a match in there!

I got the bug kicked back down the hole, but my hair was standing up like the thorns on a thisel...my hat wouldn't even fit on my head! Took about a half hour before they laid down, all eight of them and I had the willies the rest of the night!

Did a beer can fall out of the sky and crush him? Men should act like men! I love those Millwakees Best commercials!

Lisa...No the muskrat is not cute and cuddly, thats for sure! I've had a far bit of experience with them rodents, having been a trapper for over 20 years.

If cornered, like in the confines of a fish house, they can be just as aggressive and nasty as anything and them teeth are razor sharp from all that gnawing. I've known a few people that have been bit and a few that came close.

Usually, when they come into the fish house and it is occupied by a fisherman, the very first thing they do is deposit some musk, thus declaring the inside of the fish house their territory and then they make a leap for the throat, gnawing and clawing!

They whip that scaley tail back and forth like a short whip and it opens cuts with it's sharp edge! It keeps you off balance whilst they search for a place to make a lethal bite.

The bad thing about it is a person can fight off one, but usually if one gets into the house, a short time later, a whole bunch of em will appear and then a person is in real trouble!

Some of em are known to be carriers of small automatic weapons also! grin.gif

Cn...Years ago, we had been fishing all day and into the evening and getting pretty tired...I looked down the hole and there was a face staring back at me...scared the beejeebers out of me!

I jumped back and for a second, I thought it was a dead guy under the ice! When I looked again, I realized it was my own mirrored reflection! I thought to myself, "Wheeeew! From the looks of your reflection, you best start taking some vitimins and stop this marathon fishing...get some sleep!" grin.gif

That's a great job bringing a big northern in on a UL rod! Was it a Legend, and what pound test was the line on it?

I've never had a muskrat come into the shack, but did have one swim by the hole one time years ago when a buddy and I were spearing carp. We had about a 2'x2' hole in the ice, but the 'rat ignored it. Surprised us though.

yea dont mean to spill the beans on ya but a 36" fish is maybe 15 pounds MAX

I'd agree with that. Still... one heck of a nice Pike for the state of Minnesota!!!! Not too many lakes in the state that consistantly produce fish like that.

Congrats on the nice fish man!

No, the St. Croix rod was not a legend, next step down, not sure what it is called. I was using a 10 lb. braided line otherwise I would have been fishing 2 lb. ice line for the conditions and probably would not have landed that fish.

As for the size, this lake is famous for its short, FAT fish. It literallty filled the 8" hole. I have caught some big pike in the past and nothing has even come close to the girth this one had. Not saying it was a true 20 lbs, but thats what I'm gonna call it cause there is no proof to say otherwise. \:D

Grebe, I had no idea that muskrats could be so deadly, glad I was able to defend myself.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
