SnipeZilla
So my friend caught what looked to be a hybrid between a small and largemouth bass. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, what would you call it?

SnipeZilla
I dont think that's what is was. Kilmo11 is the one who caught it. I'll let him know and he'll get a pic here.
SnipeZilla
It had the body of a largemouth, not the sunnie-like body of a rock bass. Red eye like a small and a different body pattern.
Deitz Dittrich
yep---gonna need to see a pict.. was a pict taken?
MJCatfish
There was mention of this several years ago in either Outdoor Life or Field & Stream. They called it a meanmouth bass. I caught what I thought was one a few years back in the Park Rapids area. Didn't look exactly like a largemouth or a smallie. For sure it wasn't a rocky. The body looked like a largemouth and the head looked like it belonged on a smallmouth.MJ
SnipeZilla
Yea, that's got to be it then. I'll talk to the guy that caught it and get the pic up asap. He caught it out of Lac Lavon which has largemouth and has recently been stocked with smallies.

polarsusd81
Before even seeing a pic of the fish, I would be leaning towards the possibility that a few Spotted bass may have been stocked along with the smallies. Spots look like a largemouth but have the mouth of a smallie, lower jaw lobe rests in front of the eye. They also have the red eye like a smallie and the dorsal fin is similar to a smallie. Spots are quite common down south, and you would be hard pressed to find any up here, but it is possible. From what I know, they don't care much for the cold season. But definitely post up a pic so we can see what this fish looks like. Here is a represenation from the Texas Parks and Wildlife site of a Spot. SnipeZilla
Doubtful on the spotted. I talked to Kilmo today and he says it had the bronze body of the smallie. I'll remind him AGAIN to get the pic up here. Sorry to keep you guys waiting.
slipperybob
I've caught something like that, was about 14 inches...Looks just like a large mouth all green back and white bottom...but has red eyes and the mouth is smaller than that of a large mouth. I could only conclude that it was a large rock bass. Afterall we did catch several fairly large rock bass in the 8-10 inches range a few weeks prior. They seem to lose their rounded sunfish shape as they get bigger and become more elongated like bass.Needless to say...somebody toss him away and decided that a sucker would make for better dinner... SP180
I believe that MN has a few spotted bass floating around in the local lakes. Having lived in some of the meccas for spotted bass and caught my fair share, i believe i have caught a few in a metro lake a few years ago.
