Ice Flasher

I am looking at getting an ice flasher for this year's season...first unit. I'm liking the Marcum Vx-1 and the Vexilar Fl-8 Genz Box. The price seems right on the Marcum but Vexilar is a more well known name. What else should I be looking at? Is transducer cone angle a big deal?

Any help would be great...thanks.

Welcome!

You can't go wrong with either one of them.

I had a VX-1 and it worked great. Be aware, with either one in a large group you will have some interference to deal with. Just the nature of the beast.

Fishingprostore has refurbed VX-1's for $179 and free shipping with a one year warranty. That's a sweet deal while supplies last. Check out the Super Ice Package 1, VX-1 and VS 250 camera for $278. I have both and have been very pleased with there performance.

Thanks for that link Tim. I jumped on that deal.

Do you know what is all needed for the rebates? That specific deal says they are refurbed to new, and thought I'd at least try for the rebate(s). I guess the worse they can say is "no".

Well i have he FL-8Se not on the genz box though, i bought the soft pack with it for 20 bucks and it really protects the flasher. if i was you i would go with a vexilar becuase it i think it does a better job of getting rid of the interference than a marcum. but i would go with the Fl-12 if you got the money. ( im not sure if it has zoom, i dont have zoom, but it sure looks like an awesome feature).

I would check fishing pro store to see if the rebate is included in the price. If you went new here's the PDF for the mail-in rebate on the VX-1 and VS-250 its for purchases through 15 Jan 08 and must be postmarked by the 31st of January 08 to receive the cash back. I'm sure Pete's pumping a few of these out wink.gif there buying them from another ice fishing site I visit as well. Solid unit that that took a tumble out of a sled on a fishing trip last year and still functioned fine. You'll love it...

The rebate is not available on the reconditioned unit. Here is the verbage from the product description on their HSOforum:

This unit comes complete with battery, charger, electronics shuttle with adjustable transducer arm, self-aligning transducer, gimbal bracket, and MarCum VX-1 sonar powerhead. No Rebate on reconditioned to new units. This is a stellar deal! Get 'em now while we have 'em!

Price: $179.99

There are a few different transducers you can get with the Vexilar and even a dual one which can be switched back and forth. I wanna say the lower the number the smaller the cone which is best for deep water. One of my Vexilars has the dual but never used the narrow setting.

My first flasher was a Zercom Color Point, worked great until it went missing but didn't have IR (interfearance reduction) which is nice to have.

Right now own four Vexilars.

FL8 in Genz fabric case.

FL8SLT with dual beam ducer in Ultra Pack with fabric case.

FL18 with same as above with normal ducer.

FL20 with same as above.

My favorite until the FL20 was the FL8SLT. The zoom is really nice. The FL8 seemed really dim compared to the other three flashers so it's only seen the top of the ice once. It's in like new condition with brand new ducer so perhaps there's something else wrong. My cousin uses a 20 year old FL8 and his is brighter. A couple years ago he had the motor rebuilt and a new light was installed, $30.

The Ultra pack is really the way to go, it even has an option cup holder! My wife and I have matching Vexilar Ice Armor jackets and she wears hers every day.

The LX's have more power and are great flashers as well.

I have an fl-8slt and a marcum lx-3tc and all I ever use is the vex. The marcum just cant get rid of interference very well. When that lx-3 is around vexilars you might as well shut it off. Plus I have had alot of problems with the lx-3 as well. I would try and sell it to ya but I'd feel guilty.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
