straydog
About two years ago my springer, who was just a small puppy then, kicked my vex into a 10 inch hole on LOW, I dove to the floor and caught it but when it fell in it flipped upside down and the battery sank to fast to grab. This year my camera seams to be missing after a weekend on URL. Could this have been one of them splashes everyone hears but is'nt sure what it was? Oh well its a small price to pay for otherwise great fishing. [This message has been edited by straydog (edited 02-03-2003).]
Farley
last summer while canoe-ing down the Crow river I lost my cell phone. Didn't even know I had it with untill we figured out we left the keys to the truck at the landing we put in at. I made one call to my roomate to come pick us up but I was breaking up so I told him I'd call him back, as I was putting it back in my pocket, the other canoe T-bones us and sploosh, there goes our only hope of catching a ride. As for ice fishing: lots of depth bombs, lighters and the keys to the fishouse once.

the big dipper
73 jeep wagoneer -- I had picked up a 12 pk on the way to go tip up fishing and as usual my judgement as to ice thickness was slightly impaired. I would have been ok if I had turned around and drove off the lake where i drove on, instead I figured I'd be able to make it to the public access, WRONG. The jeep went down in 10 ft, 300 yds from the access. Talk about lights under the ice! Anyway, I also lost 30 lbs of Venison sausage I had just picked up at the meat market. When we pulled the jeep out two weeks later there were three ice cold Schmidt's that still tasted ok, but the sausage tasted like dump. The lake water had leached all the salt out. Ely Lake Expert
I have one for you guys. It was about a month ago. 3 of us went fishing and we brought 2 portables. One of my buddys has a small clam and was fishing in there by himself and I was in my 4x8 portable with my other buddy. My house is set up with four aluminum poles, one in each corner with cross bars across the top. We were all set up, lines ready to go and I needed was bait. I get out and head towards the clam to grab some bait. As I unzipped the clam I hear ploop. I said what the "heck" (or other words) was that. My buddy in my house says I don't know, then said oh "heck" your corner pole went down the hole. Then I said you stupid ****. I went back to my portable and he blamed the wind. I was kind of windy so I said ok, no big deal and rigged it up with a shovel and some bungy cords. We fished there for a while with no luck. So we went with our backup plan and went to a nearby lake that has always produced fish for us. We got there and and set up. 3 poles, shovel and a few bungy cords. We were ready to fish so I went to my buddys clam and grabed some minnows. On the way back to my portable I hear ploop. Then hear laughing. Then you heard another what the "heck" was that out of me. I unzipped the portable to see that the other pole on the same side of the house was gone. Some vulgarities followed. Then I asked him if he was secretly working for L&M. He again blamed the wind, which was worse on this lake. I said put things away and started to take the house down. I put the one tip up I had down and sat in the truck. One day tally- 130 miles on truck,6 hours 3 guys no fish, cold toes, and -2 ice holes poles.Ely lake expert
icehousebob
When my boys were young, we hit Tonka for Crappies. #4 son, about six then, wandered off, leaving his rod on the ice. #2 son saw it heading for the hole and took off from 20 yards away. Slid the last 5 on his belly and reached down the hole all the way to his shoulder. He brought up the rod, complete with a nice fish still attached. His younger brother walked up and announced that since the rod belonged to him, the fish was his also. That kid aught to go into politics.
Fishn'Lady
We went out to URL over the weekend. On day two we moved to a new spot. In the process of cleaning out the holes I lost a set of keys. Tried fishing for them with a heavy duty magnet but no luck. Luckily it was a duplicate set of truck keys and keys to my parents house. I came close to losing another set that had the important keys on them, but managed to catch those as I watched the others fall. Oh well, glad to see that I'm not the only one and my loss seems insignificant to some of the others. ------------Fishn'Lady
WallEYES
A few years ago on a hard/soft transition area on Mille Lacs, I was fishing with a few other guys for eyes and perch. I drove my vehicle up that weekend. While fishing outside, I was watching over the edge of the hole for a average sized eye that took kindly to my offering. Well, my keys fell out of the chest pocket of my wool bibs and down the hole with no spare keys. With a vista cam we were able to locate them on the bottom about 5-6 feet away from where they originally went in. We then proceeded to drill a few holes where they were located with the camera. After a few hours and a little bit of luck with a airplane jig, we were able to get the keys and get the heck out of dodge.

deadeye
I lost my cell phone down the hole two weeks ago. I was at a trout lake that was clear down to 40 feet and i was in twenty feet of water. I could see it laying down there so I broke out the sweedish pimple and ended up snaging it where the antenae pushes into the phone. Talk about lucky! After about two days of drying it ended up working fine. ><>deadeye

Bad Moon
Lost my glasses, an ice dipper, left a chisel standing tall in the mud once. Lost a pliers, but that might have been intentional. I was laughing so hard after my pal dropped his Maglite down the hole, that in order to keep me from hyperventilating he "accidently" dropped my pliers. Another time on Mille Lacs we were shaking dice in a rental fish house, when one of the other guys got too wild and lost a die down a hole. It is not good to play 6-5-4 with only 4 dice. Not to worry I said, I will just go and see if anybody else in the nearby fish houses has an extra die we can have. To my surprise, nobody did! I was once again amazed at how many folks will venture out on the ice without emergency supplies.
snapjigger
Was up on Mille Lacs three weeks ago. After some cocktails and a couple nice eyes, we decide to hit the sack. I had just bought a new sleeping bag rated to -10. We turned the heater down and fell asleep. About three to four hours later I awoke to feel snow falling on my face. ( Sleeping by the door) I could see my breath but was nice and warm in the bag so went back to sleep. When I woke in the morning it was -5 and very windy. My buddy had left his vex in the hole all night and the ducer cord was froze solid the hole had froze in at least 2" He had to cut it to get it out.. That won't happen again... CANOPY SAM
Many years ago a buddy and I go down to his fish house pretty late at night for some R&R. We get the fire stoked up, punch some holes and settle in for a couple of cold ones - needless to say we'd had more than a couple already! He's got one of these electric lanterns with the battery housing that screws onto the bottom of the lantern. So we're sitting there enjoying the night and suddenly there is instant darkness, followed by an explosion of water in our faces. The lantern had been hanging directly above the holes and evidently he hadn't screwed the bottom on quite tight enough. Of course, we think that the world has come to an end, he burns his hand on the stove, and we stumble out onto the ice in the pitch blackness dripping wet and still trying to figure out what the heck just happened.I still laugh about this almost 25 years later. We had to lock up and go home cause we didn't have any other light source.....
Guest
2 weeks ago my fishing buddy bought a aqua view and we went out fishing to check it out,it was getting dark so he was putting the unit away. this tripod stand he bought for the cord went right down the hole 30 feet of water. after putting the aqua-view away he picks his pole up and guess what, the tripod is hooked on his angle eye jr, man them jigs catch everything. Shorthair Guy
Last weekend My mom and dad were watching my boys (4 and 20 mo.) for the night. They decided to take them ice fishing. Dad drilled the holes and cleaned them out. Set the skimmer on the ice and began to get a line in the water. My youngest interested in what my dad was just doing with that skimmer picked it up and before dad could react just threw it down the hole. The worst part if it is, that the skimmer he threw down the hole was the very first skimmer dad bought some 30 plus years ago when he first started ice fishing. I guess the moral of the story is watch the young ones.
Guest
That's why I only let my boy play with The Big Dipper when he is on the ice - it floats.I usually end up fishing about 5-6 lakes during the winter. In the last 2 years I have lost 3 pairs of pliers - all in the same lake, in about the same spot on the lake. It must be the Beebe Lake Triangle of pliers for me or something.kgm
redhooks
OK just to prove how clumsy I am-3 cell phones (glad I have the insurance),A digital camera off the dock (still works after drying it out!), several ice scoops, a spud bar, several pocket knives and leathermans, somewhere around 46 depth bombs, and a hand carved spearing decoy that my grandpa made(that's the one that hurts most). I'm just glad I manage to pull more things out of the hole than I drop into the hole ! tight linesredhooks
Xplorer
Shorthair Guy, Can I relate to your story. A few years ago I was crappie fishing on a small lake that my in laws have a cabin on. F-I-L and I were out and I had his ancient ice scoop hooked over the top of a spud bar. I am fishing a few holes when all of a sudden the spud bar starts to tip over, and the scoop goes straight down a hole in slow motion. OOpps!!!I let out an expletive and he just looked like a lost pup. We went up to the cabin where my wife and M-I-L were and had lunch, during which my oopsy came out. He just said "that scoop is is really old and was my dads" and I thought he was gonna cry (toughguy he is)Well, I spent the next three hours trying to fi**** out of 15' of water. Tried everything I had, and just about ready to give up when I got it on a large daredevil. Noone could believe I got it, including myself.I also dropped an axe of his while crossing a beaverpond on thinice in Dec. Again the almost crying look, so I took off my jacket/shirt and went in up to my shoulder and got the darn thing back. Almost froze to death but he still tells that story today and just shakes his head.Xplorer
Guest
I've never dropped anything valuable down a hole except one day I caught a 4 lb Largemouth Bass on a tipup. While gettin it out of the hole I got it out just enough to see it when the hook came out and the bass fell back in the hole. Without even thinking I reached down in the hole up to my shoulder and luckly the bass still has it's huge mouth open and I grabed it. My buddies were watching this and thought it was the best catch of a bass they have ever seen.
fishlakeman
I've had many mishaps on the ice. I've had 2 large mag lights go through (40$comb.)My buddies week old cell phone went through while bringing up a walleye. And most recently, I was crappie fishing on Independence and got all my things together and left after 4 hours of fishing. I dropped my friend off and then it hit me. I LEFT MY VEXILAR ON THE ICE!!!!! I was fishing a hole about 75 yds away from the truck and brought my rod back to fish in the house for a while, and as time passed, I forgot that it was out there, packed up and left. I drove back as soon as I had realized it ( a little over the speed limit) got to the ice drove out with little hope, as there were 25 more cars than when I left, but the vex got covered by snow and I got it back! What a relief
