DRH1175
I will be hanging my new 45,000 btu garage unit heater this Friday. How would you hang it? Perp to walls or diag. accross garage. I have a standard 2 car garage about 26 x 24. Any tricks that anyone can think of that has done it and learned from it? Thanks!
DRH1175
Forgot to mention I am hanging it in one of the back corners.
Surface Tension
I think I'd aim at the opposite corner.
Tom7227
Aren't you're going to have to do something to seal off the attic/roof? All of the heat is going to go up there and escape through the vents. How did you decide what size you needed? I have a 3 car with a cement/spancrete ceiling. It's colder than all get out and I'd like to be able to use it more. It has a low ceiling so I can't put up a lot of insulation and was wondering if i'd have to spend a ton of dough to get a big heater.
DRH1175
You will have to insulate it otherwise all you will be doing is heating the outside. If you have spancrete what is below or above? I have a 26x24 garage that is completely insulated. A 45000 btu would be plenty of heat for a 3 car. But it would have to be insulated. If you are looking for just a part time heater. For turning on when you need heat and shutting off when you are done. I would recomend like a reddy heater type unit. Hang the thermostat on the wall behind the unit within 10-15 ft of the heat. It's the last spot the heat up and the hot air circulates through the garage.I'm hanging on soon as well. Steve Bakken
I'm one step ahead, but in the same boat. I hung mine in the rear corner and aimed it at an angle toward the opposite corner. Works great and heats fairly evenly. Thermostat is behind and on the wall.
Shack
I should go to bed, but this is a good thread that I can not resist responding to. I have had a couple of cocktails and figure I would take some images and post. I am once again going against some of the best “advice guys” on FM for the placement of the heater and t-stat. This is what has worked for me and I feel I could work for others. I dealt with this issue of which direction to hang my heater. I started out thinking of an angle shot to opposite corner, but I really thought hard about where I wanted to concentrate heat. I have a 30’ x 40’ attached garage, with a 75,000 but heater. I went with a 75,000, because I got a great deal on one new in the create unit. The way I seal and insulated my garage, I could have went with a 45,000. I paid less for the 75,000, than I would have bought a new 45,000 from Home Depot. I installed it my self (chimney and gas line) and thought very hard on how to place unit. I guessed on facing heater to area of garage I most likely would be using almost most of the time. The work bench area. I also placed my t-stat in the area where I would be at the most (why heat an area that you are not in or do not use). I figure why heat the forward area (twords garage doors) than I have to. I will show you what I mean by some pics I took of my garage heater and the situation I have. Here ya go. A genral shot of area where i use the most! You can direct fins down word on heater (Renzor). The workings behind heater. My t-stat placement. its about 15 feet from heater in center of work bench. Note the fan on ceiling in center. This a shot of the area the fan blows heat down to heat area i work in the most. Here is the reason why I did not face heater to the oppisite corner. I insulated and adjust my doors (every fall) for the maxium cold block. Iused 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" foil yellow polly board to insulate my two front doors and the rear door. I used foil tape to seal and blend in all area's. Also, if you dent your insulation, a little strip of foil duck tape will cover up the bobo. It also looks cool. Shack
It cost's me $30-40 (during cold outside temp months) dollors a month to heat this garage with they way I insulated it (depends on outside temp, how I keep inside temp at). Spend the extra time to seal it up and save money years down the road. It could pay for its self after time. Good luck!
Scott K
Nice garage shack! I wish I had a lift in my garage. Oh well if I did I would be in it working all of the time. Do you heat all winter, or just when your using it?
The_Duckslayer
Your garage is WAy to clean and organized! I too wish that I had a lift in my garage. I am in the same boat. The heat exchanger on the old heater in the garage went out last year. I keep the garage at 45 through out the winter (that is as low as the thermostat goes) and turn it up when I am going to be working out there. Any one have any good suggestions as to which heaters are more reliable? I have only looked at Mr Heaters so far and that was only on the net. My brother had a "hotdog" in his and it heated the place up nice though I don't know who makes that brand. I need to get that done soon though as the cold weather is upon us. Shack
Thanks Guys! I build my house around this hoist. If anyone is familiar with the old Coon Rapids Chrysler store on the Blvd., this was a hoist from the rear bay area. I knew owner and got it for next to nothing when they moved to new store out on Hwy10 and Foley. The owner leased property and it was leave it or sell for a couple hundred bucks. This time of year, I have been advertising for auto repair. This year I have some residual brake jobs and tune ups, but I have slowed down. My wife hates it, but I sleep out there at times. I sat. T.V. and three monitors. Also a Quad huge speaker sound system that is hooked into satellite and T.V.’s. I have almost every thing I could of think of. When I brought it up to speed a year and half ago, I would go almost days with out going in my house. Funny thing, my wife use office area on work bench now, more than me. I am proud of this garage. I worked my azz off and did it for very cheap. Find good deals and do it your self. It all add’s up to how far you want to take it.
Shack
Duckslayer,I have a Renzor unit. I came highly recommended and has work great now for 4 years. I bought it from Little Big Horn in Coon Rapids. It was an order in from the previous year and they wanted out of their show room. Right place at right time.I also was lucky enough to find a t-stat that goes to 40 deg... I run my garage at this temp all winter. I bring up to 50 or 55 when I am working out in garage. Some times higher when we have poker night.
The_Duckslayer
Luv that wet bar! Who sells the Renzor units? I have heard of them and would not mind checking them out. Thanks! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo
Roofer
I have a Mr. Heater Big Maxx in my attached garage. I keep it at about 55 and up to 70 or so when I sit out there and watch NHL center ice(lol, she doesn't like watching that much hockey). It has worked well for the last 2 years, and it gets used very often. I also have a hot dawg brand heater for my shed, but haven't hooked it up yet. They have been a top brand for a long time, as well as Reznor. My propane distributor even had to ask, " how many propane tanks do you have now" LOL. Too bad it is getting so expensive though. I used to run a small 100 lb tank in my garage, and it was $29 to fill 4 years ago. This year they are up to $70 for a 100 pounder.

Shack
Sparce, That is a picture of my dad and one of my uncles from the hay days of the late 1970's. It was taken before he quit drinking and it just fasinated me enough to frame it. It one of the only picutes I went out and had framed. He is second oldest of 5 brothers and grew up in Columbia Heights. From the sound of things from the past, I would say more like the sopranos. Nice garage,, but you really should have put a shut off valve in line right before your gas valve on the heater,,, unless there is one right on top of the pic I cannot see. If there isnt you might want to put one in just in case you ever have trouble,, if your garage burnt down without one you might be screwed because it was not installed to code
MNice
Aslo, a drip T is required before a unit heater.
Shack
Your guys are right. Both shut off valve and drip "T" are right off of main line coming down from ceiling. You just can not see them.
