Biggest problems out on the ice??

Wind. In the early season ice fishing in wyoming, i was fishing on a lake that had no snow on top yet and the lake was only half frozen. I'm sitting in my portable, when a big gust of wind hits my shack. I keep getting pushed across the ice and im not stopping anytime soon, I look my window and see im straight heading to the open water. So i jump out of my shack, try to tip my shack (windsail) over, fall, dislocate my shoulder, and get drug behind my shack for about 40 ft as im hanging on until the wind dies down and i stop moving

needless to say, I stopped bringing my shack on the ice on windy Wyoming days unless I have snow and stakes.

A bag usually works for me. Beware the dreaded wallmart bag. My buddy was out on Mille Lacs last year in his portable and the old #2 hit. Well this was no ordinarry poo, this is the one you could pass through a screen and not hit a single wire. Well he attempted to poo in a wallmart bag, the cheap bag blew out the bottom. So there he is in the middle of the lake, no watter to wash up and poo on everything. It sprayed all over the floor and all over his vex. From there, he washed his hands in the hole and then went to his truck to find some napkins or anything to clean up with. While he was gone, he left the door open on his shack...big whoops!!! Upon returning, all his poo had frozen to everything. So he ended up having to turn on the heater and waiting till the poo un-thawed to clean up. He said the smell was unberable.....Beware the Wallmart Bags!!!!

I have a Trap Pro. I use a 5 gal bucket with the toilet seat lid made for them ( Fleet Farm carries them ) line it with regular kitchen garbag bags. I glued a piece of foan on top of the lid so it doubles as table. Its in the sled next to the seat. Never have to move it. When not being used as a ???? its perfect for a side table. If you have to go, just open the lid and do your business, close the lid and you have a table again. The smell is usually not a factor, nothing a open door for a few minutes can't handle.

When I am ready to leave a spot, I do my business in the hole, push it under the ice with my slush scoop, and fold up my portable and leave... j/k

Thats not real ethical or good for the enviroment, I hope you reconsider that practice. Human waste has many viruses and bactria that are harmfull to wildlife, humans and the enviroment. That is why you should do your buisness at least 100 ft from any water source!!!

For me the worst problem is getting off work and heading on to the lake then the phone rings and the wife thinks that for whatever reason she has, is more important then me fishing!

I had my auger blade go down the hole. I had my auger not start on low, my son drop his brand new game boy down the fishing hole, I felt so bad I had to buy him another one.

Left the headlights on, luckily I brought a spare 12 volt battery to run vex and lights on. During setup, kick the minnow bucket and break it, then watch all the minnows as they freeze to the ice. Forgot to bring the wallet, luckily the co let me mail in a copy of my license. There has been many good things already. Keep them going, some of these bring me back and I think, yep, thats happend to me grin.gif.

LMAO. Worst for me last season was tearing up my trailer lighting on the wheelhouse on a -20 windy Friday evening AFTER I had picked up my grandsons for a weekend trip.

They wanted to go so bad that I cobbed together some temp tail lights (with hand warming breaks every 5 minutes) and then headed for URL.

I don't know that it is a problem, but it is an aggravation for me. Sometimes I feel that I should be driving a garbage truck on the ice because of all the garbage left out there. I am always finding beer cans and bottles all over the ice and no one seems to be able to take their 1# propane bottles off with them either. I find them by the doxen. I take a garbage bag with me and anything that goes on the ice with me goes off with me. I will admit that I have had the little bag or card that ice jigs come on get away from me in the wind at times and couldn't run it down. I live in SD and there is garbage all over the ice. I can imagine what it is like in some of the more populated states. It is very easy to bring a bag and pack it off when you leave. frown.gif

Last year on a particularly beautiful day, I got out to my spot and began to start the auger (old Eskimo) and as it started, I noticed that the screws holding the shroud on were starting to vibrate loose. It takes a pull or two and when it starts it tends to die, so I need to start it a few times to get it warmed sufficiently. I managed to get it warmed up and then all 4 of the screws proceeded to work there way loose and drop into the snow. I finished drilling my holes and when I went home I was able to replace the screws and nuts, but I was very close to having to leave early. Lock-Tite and Nylock nuts are two of the most important items on anything mechanical from now on.

Here's the senario: Four guys heading up to LOW for the day. One guy says I'll just bring my auger its brand new, you don't need to bring yours. Get to the lake, start setting up, guy with new auger pulls rope out of recoil on second tug, he must have thought the rope was 6 feet long. After the rest of get done laughing, we luckily had enough tools to "rig" the recoil enough to get the auger started.

Oh my..... pphhewwww...This is the funniest, grossest, biggest problem on the ice. All others pale in comparison. We might as well close this thread because if there is a worse one, I'm not sure I want to hear it shocked.gif

Having my house broken into was not a pleasant experience. Broken glass everywhere, broken shades, and fish cleaning kit gone that I received as a gift the week before. The resort owner was able to determine who broke into a total of five houses that night because there were only five people out that night. The tracks from the houses that were broken into led back to the vandal's house. From what I recall, a father let his son and a few of his friends use the house that night where they proceeded to get intoxicated and vandalize houses. So what happpened? The resort owner told the dad/owner of the house, that if it happened again, that he would no longer be welcome at the resort. By the way, none of the stolen property was returned. confused.gif

HeHeHe...One time I was out spearing in a bay surrounded by houses when old #2 hit. Well, I looked all around and there was no cover anywhere to be found- houses and pying eyes everywhere. There was NO WAY that I could make it anywhere without having an accident. Long story short, a small sauce pan made the ultimate sacrifice that day. I am telling you, folks....hitting a small target like that is NOT that easy!!!! cool.gif

Sooooo, 5 houses get hit, the violators are found and named, no gear is returned, and that is all the farther it got??? With no action taken other than an empty threat, I'd be calling the cops myself. If there are no consequences, what's to stop others from doing the same thing? I don't care if they were minors or not, the gear had to go somewhere!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
